Richard Stockton was a signer of the Declaration of Independence from New Jersey. A lawyer, he was not interested in politics at first, and initially favored a partial reconciliation with Great Britain that would give America some independence from Parliament but not the king. Despite this, he responded when duty called, and became a leading American patriot and champion of independence.
