  • Exports From Japan Declined By 14.8% YoY
    Exports from Japan declined by 14.8% yoy to JPY 5.23 trillion in August 2020, compared with market consensus of a 16.1% drop and after a 19.2% plunge in July. This was the 21st straight month of decrease in overseas sales, amid deteriorating global demand due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis and supply chain interruptions. Exports to the US slumped further, while those to China grew less.

  • UN Warns Of Yemen Famine
    The UN's humanitarian chief on Tuesday warned that the spectre of famine has returned to war-torn Yemen and for the first time singled out Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait for giving nothing to this year's $3.4bn appeal for desperately needed aid.
    Mark Lowcock told the UN Security Council that famine in Yemen, the Arab world's poorest country, was averted two years ago because donors swiftly met 90 percent of the UN's funding requirements, enabling humanitarian agencies to increase monthly aid from eight million to 12 million people and save millions of lives.

  • World Trade Organisation Says US China Tariffs Violates Trade Rules
    The World Trade Organization has ruled that tariffs the US imposed on Chinese goods in 2018, triggering a trade war, were inconsistent with international trade rules.
    The WTO said the US did not provide evidence that its claims of China's unfair technology theft and state aid justified the border taxes.
    Chinese officials welcomed the ruling.

    The number of confirmed coronavirus infections in India has surpassed five million, the second-highest in the world after the US.
    The virus appears to be spreading much faster in India than any other country, with daily cases crossing 90,000 for the five days up until Tuesday.
    More than 80,000 people have died, amid reports of shortages of intensive care beds and oxygen supplies.

    The National Coordinator of the task force, Dr Sani Aliyu, disclosed this on Tuesday, in response to the joint Senate committees on Health and Aviation on the testing procedures, following the reopening of the international airspace.
