After the Bell: Teaching Tips With a Twist

Roy and Martin wish you the best of the season with another Christmas bonus.  These are part of the ongoing bonus series called The Fieldtrip Sessions. Each episode is called The Fieldtrip Interviews and is a remix of two previously released guest interviews.  Today's Bonus Episode is a combination of  two political guests Roy and Martin had on during Season 1, Trustee Cyndi Gerlach and Clint Johnston, the President of the Canadian Teachers’ Federation.

With their chat with Trustee Gerlach, The Stunt Brothers bring the listeners an exploration of diversity and inclusion in the classroom. This episode will be sure to evoke discussion among all the partner groups who strive to make diversity and inclusion work in today's classroom. Cyndi does not hesitate to answer the tough questions and calls upon her 14 years of experience as a school trustee and many years as a parent of two autistic children. As always, The Stunt Brothers strive to bring all the separate bubbles out there together so that we hear each other, understand each other, and work together to make public education the best it can be.

For the second half of this Bonus Episode, Roy and Martin visit Clint Johnston, Past President of the BC Teachers' Federation and current President of The Canadian Teachers’ Federation. The BCTF represents over 51 000 public school teachers in the province of British Columbia, Canada. Clint has just completed his second term as BCTF President and has now moved to Ottawa to start a new chapter as President of the Canadian Teachers' Federation.  He now represents over 370 000 teachers all across Canada. Last May, The Stunt Brothers went on a fieldtrip to sit down with Clint in his Vancouver office. The conversation is deep and revealing and provides insight into leadership, unionism, activism, social justice, and family. Sit down and listen and maybe make yourself a cocktail.

In Season 2 Episode 17, The Stunt Brothers wish you the best of this holiday season. Roy and Martin hope you get a chance to have warm moments with family and friends and manage to get some much needed recovery from the exhaustion of the last few months in the classroom. The Stunt Brothers start the episode with excitement that many new guests are lined up for 2026 with a variety of topics including an exploration of the journey of new teachers, retirement preparation with Linda Watson, and a deep dive into outdoor education and physical literacy.

The Stunt Brothers, inspired by an excellent segment on the CBC Radio program The Current with Matt Galloway, wanted to discover more on the topic of incivility. So they spoke with Owen Howell, a secondary school teacher at Carson Graham Secondary in North Vancouver, Canada and Steve Zlotnik, an elementary school teacher at Montroyal Elementary in North Vancouver. Martin and Roy kick things off with a glass of Martin’s home-brewed cider before diving into Martin’s most recent camping adventure complete with masked parmesan cheese thieves and novice campers in need of some help. In this episode, Martin kicks things off with an enthusiastic ramble about the collection of tapes, CDs, and VHS treasures that he’s been digitizing at the library. But as he drones on, Roy, bored out of his mind, starts absent-mindedly clicking a pen. The clicking sound derails Martin’s train of thought and launches our hosts into a lively conversation about distractions in the classroom: buzzing insects, drifting snowflakes, and the many “Weapons of Mass Distraction” students craft from everyday school supplies. The 13th episode of Season 2 finds The Stunt Brothers chatting about what it means to find passion in this busy life. Finding one's passion, whether it be music, art, writing, gardening, or whatever, is a journey one should explore throughout life. Roy and Martin believe everyone has a creative genius within them. We all  just need to find the time to discover and unleash our creative potential. Wellness is dependent on it and that is why this episode leads to a bold mix of mental health, wellness, weight training, and music. And that leads to today's guest, Ev Natacha,  a musician and certified life coach, personal trainer, nutrition expert, and wellness specialist and creator of Phase 5 Wellness. Most importantly for Martin, Ev was a student in his grade 5 class 33 years ago. Being part of Ev's journey to discover her passions and share her thoughts on wellness, warms an old teacher's heart.

Plagued by technical difficulties, this episode almost doesn’t happen. Martin and Roy think they are going to have to cancel this episode until they receive a last minute IT rescue from Martin’s son. They do get rolling but Martin is feeling under the weather and thinks he may have to cancel their upcoming bike ride. Roy is having none of this, asking Martin to find a suitable replacement while providing a detailed plan for the day. And make sure the bike is tuned up! Martin is flabbergasted, finding Roy's request completely unreasonable. All these shenanigans make the Stunt Brothers realize this is exactly what we ask of teachers when they need to call in sick.

Martin and Roy find themselves discussing the ingenious and countless uses of duct tape as a quick fix to help extend the life of just about anything. Their conversation soon turns from the literal to the metaphorical, as they draw a parallel between duct tape repairs and the growing pressures placed on schools and teachers. Martin and Roy explore how teachers have become the “duct tape” that holds things together, asked to patch complex issues that need far more than a temporary fix.

Martin and Roy are fired up about the World Series and discuss the little details that make baseball such a fascinating game. For Martin, the series is a nice distraction from thinking about how the Alberta government ordered teachers back to work using the Notwithstanding Clause. The guys can’t help but draw some parallels between baseball and class size: team sizes are carefully set to maximize performance and success; class sizes in education should be considered in the same way. Maybe size doesn't matter in other places but it absolutely matters when it comes to class size.
