Longer days and warmer weather must mean the end of the school year is coming. And with endings comes goodbyes. As the Stunt Brothers wrap up Season 1 with their final 5 episodes, the long goodbye begins. Roy and Martin share one especially long goodbye from their past and that one time a staff member really was voted off the island. Once Martin gets the theme of today’s episode figured out correctly, Roy comes up with the brilliant idea of sharing their Top ten Goodbye Songs list. By the end of this episode you may be saying “good riddance” to another school year but we hope you will “always look at the bright side of life.”

Despite warming days and more time in the garden, somehow Martin gets on his soapbox again and starts ranting about recycling. Roy takes the bait and, using family members as sacrificial lambs, agrees that everyone is political, even if they don't know it. To take this theme further, they visit Clint Johnston, President of the BC Teachers' Federation. The BCTF represents over 51 000 public school teachers in the province of British Columbia, Canada. Clint is finishing off his term as president before moving to Ottawa in July to start a new chapter as President of the Canadian Teachers' Federation. The Stunt Brothers go on a fieldtrip to sit down with Clint in his Vancouver office. The conversation is deep and revealing and provides insight into leadership, unionism, activism, social justice, and family. Sit down and listen and maybe make yourself a cocktail.

The final countdown. Six weeks to go before the end of the school year and teachers are weary. As Roy and Martin know, at this time of the year life in the classroom is winding up and not down, despite what non teachers sometimes think. Now Martin does make the mistake of saying he feels weary too so Roy sends him for a time out in the corner. This helps gets the focus of the episode back on track as The Stunt Brothers dangle the idea of a year end carrot in front of the listeners. Then Roy and Martin have some fun tossing field trip paper work into the Detention Hall while they look back at some of their epic end of year field trips. Along the way, The Stunt Brothers share their Top Ten Signs The Year is Coming To An End. I love the smell of sunscreen in the morning.

Roy is pleased that this is Episode 15 and not Episode 2000 and hopes Martin keeps his dirty garden hands away. As it looks like the episode may slip into the world of the mundane and go for quantity over quality, they quickly change direction and share some listener comments that can be found on their website stuntbrothers.ca . Fearful that they may get voted off the island by Mr. Anonymous they quickly get to the theme of today's podcast: Building A Class Culture. 

The Stunt Brothers start with a new segment called The Backgrounder that hilights The Seven Dimensions of The Classroom Climate produced by the Faculty of Education at the University of Nebraska. Then The Nugget encourages teachers to start the year not with a focus on assessment and diagnostic testing but rather with the building of a positive and enduring classroom culture. Know this: There will be a classroom culture even if you do nothing so the secret is to shape and nurture a positive learning environment that will make the year a success for all. Be in control before the year controls you.

For The Homework Board  we want to hear from you. Tell us what you do at the beginning of the school year to nurture a class culture that is inclusive and accepting and positive. One of our heroes is Terry Orlick, who was a leader in nourishing a caring and compassionate classroom through cooperative games. We learn of his lasting legacy in Rearview Mirror.

Roy starts the episode by filing for bankruptcy and Martin freaks out! The Stunt Brothers soon get their financial house in order but show their age as they stumble over current social media lingo. Daughters and Dads. Roy decides to go on a vacation to Iceland with his daughter, Camille, while Martin gets ready to head off to Africa with his daughter, Savannah. Roy and Martin try something different by recording an episode in Martin’s kitchen on a sunny but crisp North Vancouver morning. Snowball fights in Texas, Martin’s crow friends and Roy’s rockstar-like return to the school from which he retired are all fodder for this episode. Martin drops a line from Severance which leaves them wondering if teachers can really have severance from their work life, without the operation. When it comes to creativity and inspiration, maybe the best one can strive for is pseudo-severance.

Is it connected to the Covid 19 pandemic? What is going on?
