For Episode 8 of Season 2, The Stunt Brothers get serious with the topic of food insecurity. Too many children all around the world are going to school hungry. Roy and Martin are fortunate to have a visit with someone who is doing something about that, Joanne Griffiths, who co founded Backpack Buddies in 2012 along with her daughter, Emily-anne King. Her team now feeds 6 000 children every week in British Columbia, Canada, and last year delivered over 1.65 million meals to children in 73 different communities. Wherever you live on this planet, this episode will hit home and demonstrates that one person truly can make a difference.

Extra! Extra! Read All About It!
Drop in mid conversation as The Stunt Brothers get Episode 37 of After The Bell: Teaching Tips With A Twist rolling with the change of seasons. But before we get too deep into stormy weather (That was last week!), Roy and Martin veer away from this autumnal place and head back to summer with another one of their Manning Park Sessions. After taking extra time to get to the point, The Stunt Brothers discuss extra curricular activities. For many, these are fighting words as the teaching day is already overwhelming. How do you find the time to volunteer for clubs, sports, and committees within a teaching day that can already be ten hours or longer? For others, extra curricular activities are integral to the teaching profession and provide many educators with rewards that go beyond the pay check. Take some extra time to listen to this episode and let us know what you think at stuntbrothers.ca

Today listeners finally learn what STS stands for, always first up under the chapter descriptions for this podcast. After surviving a close encounter with a sceptic truck, The Stunt Brothers realize distractions not only happen in the classroom. Roy and Martin get themselves focused on organizing desks and tables in modern classrooms that have more and more needs. As they point out, this so often feels like a game of Tetris.

On a deceptively hot September day Martin reflects on the loss of Robert Redford and references a famous Star Wars line which brings Roy and Martin to draw parallels between teachers and actors as they stumble on to the widely discussed topic of imposter syndrome from which neither thespians nor educators are exempt. But much like a scene or a lesson plan, there are always ways to work through it.

Imagine a teacher long, long ago, attempting to properly pronounce little Martin Stuible's last name on that first day of the new school year. Or Roy Junior watching his brother being sent to the office for the third time in a week over the simple switching of two letters. Or a teacher trying to name their own child with a name that does not trigger PTSD. These are the challenges of learning the names of the students in your class at this time of year. Names are seldom phonetic and this episode takes a humorous look at the challenges of a teacher trying to get it right. What's in a name? Just ask the residents of Dildo, Newfoundland.

Roy's distracted podcasting leads to a Rolling Stones song, talk of Neil Young in Deer Lake Park, and the perfect title for our back to school episode. The Stunt Brothers want you to start the year with a sense of hope, even if Darth Vader is hiding just around the corner. After all, you are a worthy teacher so ready to take on the challenge of a new year. Take this first week to build that class culture and make the connections with students we stressed during our first season. The curriculum can wait. Now is the time to create the class you want with those getting to know you activities that tell your students that this year is going to be their best year too.

It's Labour Day, so let's slow things down and take a trip to Vancouver's Pacific National Exhibition, a fair where you can win a prize home, eat mini-doughnuts, and ride an old wooden rollercoaster. The PNE is a 115 year old staple in the lives of Vancouverites, and a reminder to parents, children, and teachers that school starts tomorrow.
After having a celebration for the end of season 1, at North Point Brewing, Roy and Martin kick off season 2 by interviewing Vancouver teacher and writer, Nick Marino, author of the fabulous book, Eastside Story. A story of working at the PNE from those who worked there, including Nick and a cast of characters who would not be out of place in a Hollywood movie.
