    More and more salty snow

According to Federconsumatori, a ski week for a family of four costs over 7 thousand euros

Disconnecting from everyday life and spending a few days in the snow is a real ritual for many, singles and families. However, skiing is also affected by price increases. This is confirmed by a study on the classic ski week carried out by the National Federconsumatori Observatory, according to which seven days on the snow with six overnight stays for four people costs on average 7,104.96 euros, i.e. 11% more than last year. The biggest increases concern the weekly ski pass (+18%), equipment rental (+10%) and the hotel (+13%). Even in Courmayeur, the region's main ski resort, tourists' perception is that holidays are more expensive than last year.

In general, adds the Federconsumatori study, the response to price increases generally consists in not completely giving up the ski holiday, reducing its duration and opting for cheaper overnight stay solutions. This is true for Italians, while foreigners don't seem to be affected too much by the fact that the snow this year is a little saltier.

The position of Confcommercio is more optimistic, whose Courmayeur delegate, Edoardo Melgara , maintains that this last year's increases are in line with inflation and much less substantial than those of last year.

Public Transit Agencies Join the Fight to Curb Overdose Deaths

As the US opioid crisis continues, cities are making Narcan available to reverse overdoses on trains or near transit stations.

Sheila Haennicke’s son was on a Blue Line train in Chicago when he overdosed on fentanyl. The only thing that might have saved his life in the five minutes it took for the ambulance to arrive is naloxone, an emergency opioid overdose reversal treatment.

In the wake of her son’s death, Haennicke is part of a growing movement to make the nasal spray, commonly distributed as Narcan, available near public transit.

“If there had been Narcan on the platform or around the car, someone might have been able to grab it and help him,” said Haennicke.

The Mayors Who Aren’t Burning Out

Local politics in a polarized era can be stressful. To survive, some municipal leaders have managed to mix pragmatism and wonkiness with a flair for creativity — and a thick skin.

Just before the holidays, Houston voters elected John Whitmire as the city’s 63rd mayor, choosing the state senator over US Representative Sheila Jackson Lee in a hotly contested race. Before that two-person runoff, no fewer than 14 candidates were on the ballot.

And that raises a question: Why would so many people actually want that job?

Like so many US cities, Houston is facing a constellation of challenges. Schools are struggling and infrastructure is aging. Budgets are strained. There are fights over everything from zoning to police response, even as locals brace for the next hurricane or winter storm to swamp the place or overwhelm the power grid.

That’s not to pick on Houston, to be sure. It’s just that so many urban challenges — with climate-change-fueled natural disasters chief among them — are utterly beyond the control of any one City Hall. That could be why a recent Politico survey identified an uneasy post-pandemic era for municipal chief executives, who appear to be burning out and struggling with the demands of the gig.

Paris May Ban Key Boxes in Battle Against Short-Term Stays

The little key safes used by the landlords of vacation apartments are a form of pollution, say critics.

Key boxes are the latest flashpoint in France’s fight against unlicensed vacation apartments including Airbnb Inc.

Next month, the Council of Paris will vote on a proposal to ban the placement of these boxes in Paris’s public spaces. Key boxes are used by short-stay landlords so that they can get keys to tenants without meeting in person. While they will still be allowed on private property, landlords of apartments will only be able to install the boxes in shared buildings with other tenants’ consent. The rulealready exists but would be fully enforced for the first time.

Tokyo Is Overwhelmed by How Many Women Want to Freeze Their Eggs

Airbnb in a statement said it tells hosts specifically about the law regarding key boxes “and we remind hosts to follow the rules.”

If the proposal passes, Paris will join an existing group of six French cities including Nice, Lille and Annecy that have banned placing key boxes in public and require landlords wanting to install one in a shared lobby to seek permission from the tenants’ association. In these cities, authorities simply place a sticker on any box they discover — both in public or shared private spaces — requiring the owner to contact the city for approval within two weeks. If the city hears nothing within that period, the box is removed. If the owner applies, the box can still be removed if it is illegally located in a public place or if other homeowners in the building object to it.

Americans Are Volunteering Less Than Ever

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a popular day for volunteering. But service work overall has hit a record low.

Every year on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Americans are encouraged to volunteer to honor the legacy of the late civil rights leader. The federal holiday was officially dedicated to volunteerism in 1994 under the King Holiday and Service Act in a bid to motivate the public to do good in their communities.

While the holiday is a popular time for civic service, the volunteering rate across the US is at record lows, following a steady decline since at least the 2010’s.

The latest official data on community service, released last year by AmeriCorps through the Census Bureau, revealed a particularly steep decline during the pandemic. Less than a quarter of Americans age 16 and older said they formally volunteered through an organization between September 2020 to September 2021, down from 30% in 2019 and the lowest rate recorded since the organization began the survey in 2002. The decline is prevalent across various states and demographic groups, according to the data.

“During the pandemic, volunteer rates declined by a tremendous amount, and now the data shows that volunteering rates are lower than they have ever been,” says Nathan Dietz, research director of the Do Good Institute at the University of Maryland. “That’s a bigger and much more substantial change than we ever saw during the 2010’s when we saw gradual declines, and the question is how the sector is gonna be able to recover from that.”

NY Congestion Pricing Plan Violates US Constitution, NJ Governor Says

NJ adds MTA as defendant in its lawsuit in amended complaint

Murphy asks court to stop construction for congestion pricing

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy is again pushing back on New York’s plan to charge motorists driving into Manhattan’s central business district, saying it violates the US Constitution as the new toll discriminates against New Jersey residents.

New Jersey in July sued the US Department of Transportation, claiming the tolling plan needs a longer environmental analysis. The suit now adds New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which is implementing the plan, as a defendant, according to an amended complaint filed Tuesday.

New Jersey claims that congestion pricing violates the dormant commerce clause of the US Constitution, which prohibits states from enacting laws that discriminate against or unduly burden interstate commerce, according to the amended complaint. The congestion pricing plan fails to direct any of the new revenue to New Jersey, or offer tax credits to its residents or charge those living in the district — who are New Yorkers — for driving within the area, according to the amended complaint.
