A new film, "Air Bud Returns," is officially in development, marking the 15th installment in the long-running family franchise. The movie is being billed as a "return to form," moving away from the talking puppies of the "Buddies" spinoffs and back to the core premise of the 1997 original.

The plot will center on a new generation, focusing on the grandson of the original protagonist, Josh Framm. This new character discovers a golden retriever puppy—the great-grandson of the original Buddy—who possesses the same uncanny ability to play basketball. Together, they must use their skills on the court to save a struggling local community center from being demolished.

In a move designed to appeal to nostalgic fans, Kevin Zegers is slated to reprise his role as an adult Josh Framm, serving as a mentor to his son. The film aims to recapture the heartfelt story of the bond between a boy and his dog that made the first movie a classic.

Producers state the film will blend modern themes with the classic, heartfelt underdog story. "Air Bud Returns" is reportedly being fast-tracked for a streaming service release, targeting families and audiences who grew up with the original.
