Drew Struzan, the highly acclaimed artist responsible for iconic movie posters for franchises like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Back to the Future, has passed away at the age of 78.[1] The news was reported by The Hollywood Reporter, and while no cause of death was officially given, Struzan had suffered from Alzheimer's Disease for many years.[1]
Struzan's career began in the 1970s, initially designing album covers before moving into film posters.[1] His 1978 "circus poster" for the first re-release of Star Wars launched him into fame and was reportedly a favorite of George Lucas.[1] Throughout his decades-long career, he created memorable artwork for numerous films, including Blade Runner, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, The Goonies, Hocus Pocus, and the Harry Potter series, among many others.[1] He was also the primary artist for Lucasfilm's Star Wars posters, including the prequel trilogy and a special poster for The Force Awakens in 2015.[1] Struzan's work was distinct for its use of traditional artistic methods without computer technology, a practice that has become a "lost art" in contemporary movie poster design.[1] He is survived by his wife, Dylan, his son, Christian, and several grandchildren.[1]
