ABOUT THE GUEST:
Walt Fritz is a PT who teaches a unique interpretation of manual therapy to SLPs, voice professionals, and other related communities. His gentle, non-manipulative, and interactive touch-based approach advances views of causation and impact from historical tissue-specific models into a multifactorial narrative, leaning heavily on biopsychosocial influences. His principles apply to a broad spectrum of intervention models using a model of evaluation and intervention that encourages equality between patient and clinician, utilizing shared decision-making rather than the biomedical clinician-as-expert approach. Unlike traditional laryngeal and soft tissue manipulation, Walt offers the clinician and patient a more subtle approach that gives the receiver more time to assess its influence and relevance. This approach is often better tolerated than aggressive forms of treatment and aligns well with newer research findings, allowing the patient to frame the intervention from their preferences and values. His work is equally appropriate for dysphagia, dysphonia, voice performance limitations, oral motor dysfunction, tongue-related concerns, breathing difficulties, and related disorders.ย With a proper understanding of how touch acts as another form of communication, a broader range of professionals can harness the potential effectiveness of manual therapy. Walt presents his live, in-person workshops internationally through his Foundations in Manual Therapy Seminars, www.WaltFritz.com. His book "Manual Therapy in Voice and Swallowing: A Person-Centered Approach," is available through Amazon. Walt is a contributing author for The Oxford Handbook of Voice Pedagogy, which will be published by Oxford University Press in 2024 and The Vocal Athlete (Plural Publications). In this episode, Nicole Goldfarb, M.A. CCC, SLP- COMยฎ interviews the pediatric ENT, Dr. David McIntosh, and they talk all about "ASD, ADHD, Sensory Processing, SDB, & ENT Issues โ and the impact of these issues on the airway and sleep.ย Dr. McIntosh sheds light on the crucial connection between ENT health, sleep-disordered breathing, and neurodevelopmental conditions like Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
The conversation explores the complex interplay between ear, nose, and throat health and neurodevelopmental disorders, emphasizing the importance of early intervention and a holistic approach to diagnosis and treatment.
๐คง ๐ ๐This is Part 3 of a multiple-part ENT series. Donโt forget to watch Part 1, which was โALL ABOUT ALLERGIESโ, and Part 2 โASTHMA, REFLUX, TONSILS/ADENOIDS, EAR INFECTIONS". ๐As a practitioner, patient, or parent, this ENT series is a must watch! ๐
๐Key takeaways from this interview include ๐:
โ
Strong Link Between ENT Issues, Sleep, and Neurodevelopment: There's a significant connection between ear, nose, and throat health, sleep-disordered breathing (especially OSA), and neurodevelopmental disorders like ADHD and ASD. ๐๐๐ง ๐ด
โ
Sleep-Disordered Breathing Mimics and Worsens Symptoms: Untreated sleep-disordered breathing can mimic ADHD, leading to misdiagnosis, and can exacerbate symptoms in both ADHD and ASD. Addressing OSA can significantly improve or resolve ADHD-like symptoms in many children. ๐ด๐คง๐ฅด
โ
Sensory Processing Vulnerability: Children with ASD and ADHD are particularly vulnerable to the negative effects of poor sleep and unresolved ENT issues due to differences in sensory processing. This can lead to hypersensitivity (being easily overwhelmed) or hyposensitivity (under-responsiveness) to sensory input. ๐ง๐๐ซ
โ
Early Intervention Is Crucial: Early detection and treatment of sleep-disordered breathing and ENT problems are critical. Even short periods of sleep disruption in early childhood can have a lasting impact on brain development and function. โฐ๐โโ๏ธ๐
โ
Holistic Approach to Care: A team approach involving parents, pediatricians, ENTs, sleep specialists, and other healthcare providers is essential to provide comprehensive and individualized care for children with ADHD, ASD, and related challenges. ๐จโโ๏ธ๐ค๐ฉโโ๏ธ
