  • Daylight Saving Time Non Binding Ban Passed

250 Sidewalks Are Out of Luck When it Comes to Being Repaired Citizens and property owners have identified 410 sidewalk sections that need replaced. The 2020 budget will take care of 160 of them. While property owners can hire someone to do the work, there’s an incentive for some to get a quote from the city. If the damage is caused by the roots of trees planted by the city of Akron, the money to replace the sidewalk comes out of the city’s general fund, not the property owners’ pocketbook. In really bad cases, the city replaces the tree with another that doesn’t have such a sprawling root system. But “if it’s just normal wear and tear on the sidewalks,” Public Service Director Chris Ludle told City Council this week, “then we will assess them $25.25 per [foot].” The funding breakdown for the projects is $405,000 in municipal borrowing, which is repaid through income tax collections, and $150,000 in estimated assessments for private property owners who by law must maintain sidewalks. If you get stuck with the bill you can spread it out over five years as an additional charge on property tax bills. For the first time, the city is adding money ($50,000) to make sidewalks accessible to wheelchairs around Akron’s community centers and parks. The process for adding a sidewalk in your neighborhood starts with a complaint.. A city engineer then assess the project, determining the extent of the damage and who’s responsible to pay for the fix. To add a sidewalk section to the city’s list, call 3-1-1 inside Akron, 330-375-2311 from outside the city or visit https://311.akronohio.gov/csrsite/csr/eula (https://311.akronohio.gov/csrsite/csr/eula) . City Council has moved the 2020 sidewalk budget for approval at the next regular public meeting on Monday. Daylight Saving Time Non Binding Ban Passed Most of the Ohio Senate is tired of changing their clocks twice a year, and they want the U.S. Congress to stop the madness.. That’s why they passed a non-binding resolution 31 to 1 February 25th urging the federal government to remove the requirement that states on DST only use it during specific dates (the second Sunday in March through the first Sunday in November). “This is basically government induced biannual jet lag,” Sen. Kristina Roegner, R-Hudson, said. U.S. states and territories can stay on standard time year round. That’s what Hawaii, Arizona and Puerto Rico do, but Roegner said that’s not ideal. She’d rather have more light in the evenings. “You’ll have more time to get out and exercise,” Roegner said. “It has also been shown that there’s a reduction in crime because of the lighter hours later.” Standard time supporters say most people don’t want to wake, get ready and send their kids to wait for the school bus in the dark. • NEW OHIO BILL WILL PUNISH DOCTORS

Billboard UpdateI had previously mentioned the billboard for Route 8, but the city was blocking it? At-large Councilwoman Linda Omobien and Ward 4 representative Russ Neal voted in favor of the billboard construction, which was defeated. James Hardy, deputy mayor for integrated development, said his staff would reach out to offer assistance to the business owner, who has previously told the Beacon Journal that the city doesn’t care about him. Ohio Bill Puts the Ownership on DoctorsA new Ohio bill seeks to restrict gender identity medical treatments for transgender youths by penalizing the doctors who prescribe them. Republican Reps. Ron Hood of Ashville and Bill Dean of Xenia plan to introduce the “Protect Vulnerable Children Act” this week. Physicians could be charged with a third-degree felony for attempting therapeutic or surgical procedures intended to alter the gender of someone under age 18. Parents could also file civil lawsuits against physicians for providing treatment. LGBTQ advocacy group Equality Ohio plans to fight the legislation until the end of the session Beloved Morning Man Stan Piatt Dies at 68For 35 years Piatt reveled in anchoring a morning comedy show on radio station WNIR (100.1-FM), bringing laughter to thousands of Greater Akron listeners by utilizing a quirky cast of regular callers and his own relentless sense of humor. The Akron tire maker on Tuesday said it lost $392 million, or $1.68 per share, on revenue of $3.7 billion for the fourth quarter ending. Dec. 31. • Duane’s Auto Body and the Route 8 Billboard

Canton Police Bust A Bunch PervsKudos for the Beacon Journal for listing their names. For those who are fans of the Game of Thrones television show, "SHAME, SHAME, SHAME..." Route 8 Billboard BattleAhead of a $125 million project to replace the state Route 8 bridge, the Ohio Department of Transportation bought and demolished the plumbing and trucking businesses below it. But the neighboring two car garage at Duane’s Auto Body, which Duane Bartoe has owned and operated for six years on East North Street, wasn’t so lucky. Bartoe got no state offer to sell, which he would have used to relocate his Akron business. Instead, he said the state warned him that the bridge work would probably close the road outside his garage for the next five years. It's kind of hard to fix cars when you can't get to the garage. So he’s looking to lease his property to Conteers LLC, a Sidney, Ohio, company that operates billboards. This would be very tall and end up being 55 feet above the bridge. “My first and foremost concern is the business owner,” said Councilwoman Tara Samples, one of the few at City Hall to show support for the billboard request in her ward. “He’s been down there for a long time. He’s watched a lot of the businesses around him get bought up or close. He’s really down there by himself.” Any billboard requires a conditional use permit in Akron. And the city, so far, has rejected Conteers’ permit request. Councilman Jeff Fusco, who chairs the Planning Committee, said he will ask colleagues if they have all the information they need to vote Monday. City officials say the billboard would be an unwanted and aesthetically displeasing distraction for drivers, as well as too tall for normal consideration. My favorite is it will block the view of a few trees and a looking into the Juvenile detention center. According the Beacon Journal, "Mayor Dan Horrigan’s planning staff, “which remains decisively opposed to the proposed use,” reiterated these concerns in recommending that Council also reject the billboard permit, which the state has separately approved." Kevin Wasie runs Exactly Real Estate on main Main Street. He’s excited about construction and revitalization in downtown Akron, but he’s troubled by the lack of opportunity to advertise his small business. According to Kevin if you want on a billboard its almost a monopoly as all the billboards are run by two companies. “There were so many events that I didn’t even know about,” Wasie told the council Monday about moving back to the area. “And I think that so many people outside of Akron don’t even know about so much of the great stuff going on down here that you guys are all a part of putting together …” “In my opinion,” he continued, “this should not be a question of whether we should or should not allow the billboard. The question should be how do we get more companies like Conteers investing in our community and how do we get more megaphones to tell our stories so people really know who we are.” The lawyer for the billboard company said it would obstruct 'only five to 10 trees.“ Support The Show Buy me " a coffee (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/davejackson) " Support this podcast

Cleveland Clinic Akron General is offering a free eight-week healthy lifestyle challenge.Healthy Akron, a Healthy Communities Initiative created to educate, encourage and empower area residents to make healthy lifestyle choices, is kicking off the challenge on Thursday, Feb. 6. To register, call 330-344-1442. The first session will include health screenings such as body mass index, blood pressure, prostate cancer and breast exams. Prizes will be awarded to the top three point earners and the two people who experience the highest percentage of weight loss. Akron Mattress Consumed in FlamesA fire destroyed an Akron mattress factory and warehouse Saturday, Feb. 1, 2020, on East Exchange Street, creating plumes of smoke that were visible miles away through the afternoon. The company located at 601 E. Exchange St., near the University of Akron campus and state Route 8 was reported to the Akron Fire Department about 11:25 a.m. Saturday Taking the School Board To SchoolIn the past to speak to the School Board you had to sign up in advance. The new policy, which Vice President N.J. Akbar drafted and the board discussed in committee last week, would allow for in-person sign-ups just before a meeting started. People could also email their requests to speak ahead of time. School boards by law do not have to include time during their meetings for public input, but almost all do. If they do, they must make the process reasonable. The backlash from the local policy’s restrictions included threats of voting against any levy request. The board’s four new members have said they heard complaints about the policy on the campaign trail, and board members last year said reviewing it would be a priority in 2020. The full board has not yet reviewed the new policy, which would have to go through three readings before it would take effect. The first reading is slated for the next business meeting Feb. 10. The draft also removes the limitation that someone can only speak on an issue six times in one year. Support this podcast
