Where do we learn habits? How we learn and how we learn to learn?
The way we learn to learn is in school. We learn from our first teachers. We also learn how to learn from intuition.
These methods are not optimized and they are not based on science. They are not based on what works the best in general for learning.
I am going to go through a few ideas that work better than what we are being told at school and what we experience from intuition. There are much more optimized methods that allow us to learn habits better.
Bad and good habits in terms of learning:
1 – We are taught to stay in one spot, blocked up in a room, and to learn new information. That actually is less effective than if you move around. You can learn at home, at school, you can learn from books, you can learn while travelling and talking to new people, you can learn from mentors and in multiple locations all over the world.
If you look at really successful people, they have travelled many countries and they have done many cool things. That way they have perspective on things that is not just out of that small community where they came from.
Most people have had that experience of travelling and learning from different perspectives from different parts of the world and different types of methods of learning.
2 – We are taught that we should focus on one subject at a time. If you focus on one subject too much, for example, if you learn sales, you do learn sales. However, you do not learn how to develop your own sales techniques.
For example, you learn sales, but you do not learn psychology, you do not learn advanced persuasion. You do not learn things that are related to sales. What happens is that you do not have a deep understanding of the subject matter. You only learn sales. You are focused on that very narrow path.
If you are really serious about mastering sales, you need to learn the subject that is related to it and get a broader and deeper understanding. That way you will be able to put different pieces together and develop your skills to a deeper and better level than your competition.
3 – Another thing is that we are taught to learn everything right before the exams. We do not remember things for as long as if you develop it into a habit of studying for the rest of your life. Just develop it every day. Keep developing your skills by implementation, by reading, by learning from mentors and you will remember things for much longer.
That way you are on your path to mastery, as opposed to cramming it in just to pass an exam.
Cramming it in = short term memory. Spreading it out and making it into a habit of learning = life time mastery. That is what really comes down to.
I remember in January everyone was setting up ridiculously high goals, which I encourage you to do. But, when January 10th came people stared giving up. A lot of people are kind of bitter and they did not implement early on, so now they gave up.
Really successful people do not care about seasons. They do not care about setting the goals early in the year. They care about implementing and ignoring everything. Forget the months, the years, the decades. Just keep implementing, maintain the habit and commit to life-long learning maintaining life-long habits.
