  • Lewis Carroll, Typewriters And Illustrators

Who is Harry Furniss, and what the heck goes on in Sylvie And Bruno? We’ll answer one of those questions, as we highlight the somewhat tumultuous and entirely entertaining relationship between Lewis Carroll and one of his later illustrators. We’ll also touch upon the famous John Tenniel and the lesser known Arthur Burdett Frost, and inexplicably skip talking about the Lewis Carroll illustrator who came between them chronologically, Henry Holiday. Plus, hear all about Lewis Carroll’s typewriter and collections of his letters that have been published over the years.

  • Lewis Carroll’s Letter Writing Guide

What can we learn about email communication from an 1890 letter writing guide? You might be surprised! It’s been a few years since Lewis Carroll wrote Eight Or Nine Wise Words About Letter Writing, but his witty advice rings true today: wait a day before sending an angry letter, be sure to add attachments before sending, ensure the other person knows when you are kidding, just to name a few invaluable rules! Plus, hear all about the Wonderland Stamp Case issued with the letter writing guide and finally learn where that picture of Alice and the Duchess’ baby came from! Also, hear Heather’s cell phone vibrate because she forgot to turn it off.

  • A Christmas Poem And The Best Christmas Gift Ever

On this special holiday episode of Alice Is Everywhere, learn all about the origins of Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland and how it started off as The Best Christmas Gift Ever. That’s right, the original written manuscript of Alice’s Adventures Under Ground was given to little Alice Liddell as a Christmas gift from the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, AKA Lewis Carroll. We’ll also discuss at length Carroll’s Christmas poem entitled Christmas Greetings From A Fairy To A Child and hear two delightful versions of it set to music. Lastly, hear Heather utter the words “Ta da! Unto you this dormouse is born, in a teapot!” (It’s not nearly as blasphemous as it sounds.)

  • White Rabbit And White Queen Chardonnay

I’m sure you’re all familiar with the lyrics, “The Eat Me cake makes you larger, and the Drink Me bottle makes you small.” What’s that? White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane isn’t chock full of lyrical authenticity? Get the story about the creation of this groovy acid rock classic, and hear a special literary interpretation of Grace Slick’s lyrics. Spoiler alert- the Dormouse never said, “Feed your head.” Plus, learn all about what happens when Heather writes to the maker of White Queen Chardonnay to inform him that the wrong queen is pictured on the label. Spoiler alert #2- he doesn’t care.  We’ll include a review of this delightful wine as well.

  • Through The Looking-Glass Wrap-Up Part 4

All hail the queens! Episode 30 of Alice Is Everywhere is all about Through The Looking-Glass queens The Red Queen and The White Queen. We throw in a little Queen of Hearts for good measure, along with an in depth discussion of the number 42. Was it really Lewis Carroll’s favorite number? Or is the evidence merely circumstantial? Plus, hear Heather’s review of Alice Through The Looking-Glass. NOT the 2016 film, the 1998 TV movie starring Kate Beckinsale! We finish up with a spirited rendition of Jam Tomorrow, Jam Yesterday, But Never Ever Jam Today! by White Queen Carol Channing.

  • Through The Looking-Glass Wrap-Up Part 3

Part three of our Through The Looking Glass wrap-up begins with Chapter Five, Wool And Water. Did the White Queen turn into the Sheep? Or was she mysteriously replaced? Learn what chess pieces have to do with the equation, as well as which characters are bishops, rooks, pawns and knights.  Was Humpty Dumpty merely reciting poetry to Alice in Chapter 6, or recounting an actual incident involving corkscrews and fishes? We discuss all this along with the burning question: what’s so funny about Anglo-Saxon attitudes, anyway? Lewis Carroll obviously though they were a hoot.

  • The Walrus And The Carpenter, Musically Speaking

We take a break from our Through The Looking-Glass wrap-up to marvel how one piece of nonsense poetry can inspire very different pieces of music. The first selection to be discussed is The Walrus And The Carpenter from Donovan’s HMS Donovan, a 1971 double album that was meant for children. The second is the 1996 composition Cabbages And Kings by David Del Tredici, an American composer who was very inspired by Lewis Carroll literature.
