  • #43 The difference between condemnation and conviction

As we talk about fitness and nutrition, I realize there is often a lot of shame around these topics.

Shame says I am a bad person. Guilt says I did something bad.

If you’ve tried to lose weight in the past and failed, you may have felt like there is something wrong with you. That’s not true. You are fearfully and wonderfully made.

There is a difference between condemnation and conviction.

The Holy Spirit brings conviction. His voice is loving and invites you into more. Many times there will be a conviction of sin. We have the opportunity to confess our sin and be forgiven.

Condemnation is from the voice of the enemy and keeps us stuck. We spiral into more negative thinking and it doesn’t produce change.

Where are you right now? Are you experiencing conviction or condemnation related to fitness and nutrition?

“So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.” Romans 8:1 NLT

This is another reason we should take in a daily diet of God’s Word in order to know the Truth of what God says about us. Satan is known as the ‘father of lies’ and will feed us one lie after another.

God is inviting us all into more each day. Will you give Him your yes?

  • #40 Why a warm up and cool down is essential (especially as we age)

As we talked about previously, a warm-up and cool down will help decrease DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness).

It also helps prevent injuries. Instead of going from 0 to 100 instantly, it gives your muscles, tendons, and ligaments a chance to prepare.

Think of a car after being parked outside in freezing temperatures. After starting it up, it needs a few minutes to warm up & allow the oil to flow through the engine to lubricate each part.

In a similar way, a good soup or stew needs plenty of time to cook in order for all the ingredients to gel together and create full flavor. You can’t rush a good soup!

It is recommended that as we age, warm-ups should get longer and slightly more gradual. This also holds true if preparing for an exercise that is particularly vigorous, or if coming back from an injury.

“When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things.” 1 Corinthians 13:11 NLT

When I was young, I didn’t need a long warm-up, but as I got older, I put away these childish habits.

  • #34 DOMS and How to Decrease Post Workout Soreness

DOMS is delayed onset muscle soreness and is usually the worst 2 days after a workout. It’s completely normal. This is what you would call “good soreness”

7 ways to decrease your post-workout soreness:

    1. Warm up - allow your muscles to warm up before heading right into a hard workout.
    2. Foam rolling - research has shown that foam rolling after a workout can help decrease soreness. The foam roller we use: https://amzn.to/2Yk2ca6. And here is a simple routine you can try: https://www.instagram.com/p/CHJtvgBJUJP/
    3. Active recovery - cool down with  some light cardio and schedule some low-intensity workouts through the week
    4. Sleep - Sleep helps our bodies recover and rebuild our muscles. Muscle-building chemicals such as Human Growth Hormone are naturally produced by your body in the deep stages of sleep.
    5. Increase circulation - Try taking a warm (not hot as this can have the opposite effect!) bath, and for extra pain relief, add to it 1-2 cups of Epsom salts. The magnesium in Epsom salts can be absorbed through the skin, helping reduce soreness and improve muscle function.
    6. Drink water - Your muscles are working harder and so they demand more oxygen and therefore need more blood pumping around – around 82% of your blood volume actually consists of water, so hydration is much more important and effective than simply quenching your thirst!
    7. Tart cherry juice - Another study found that drinking tart cherry juice helped marathoners reduce muscle soreness.
