Three kids belonging to some listeners of this podcast, as well as Joey’s son Waylon, talk about the deeper things in life.  We talk about how God is good in the context of tornadoes, some specific times their parents have cussed, how the devil is apparently stronger than God sometimes, and whether or not they would be nervous to babysit baby Jesus.  One of these kids is an open theist, none of them are quite sure whether skin is an essential organ, Waylon has lied to his dad recently and a couple of them think Cobain was killed by his wife.  Oh, and the devil created robbers and cancer.

Stoy's cultural upbringing and mentoring (or lack of) instilled various perspectives about sex, marriage and success, that he'd later have to grow out of.   Joey and Liz lament over inappropriate hip-hop lyrics, having sons who love hip-hop, and Matt exhorts Christians to repent from capitalism.   

Stoy also reminisces on middle school lingo amongst him and his black peers, throwing Joey into gleeful middle school nostalgia, remembering as kids hanging with Stoy and other black peers of Joey's.

Dr. Tiffany Yecke Brooks joins to talk her newest book, Holy Ghosted: Spiritual Anxiety, Religious Trauma, and the Language of Abuse, which is a follow-up to her previous book Gaslighted by God.  Together, her and Joey discuss spiritual anxiety (including scrupulosity), the important difference between deconstructing faith and deconstructing God, and how spiritual questions are a sign of closeness rather than separation from God, the damaging characteristics of toxic religious communities, and many other themes found in Holy Ghosted.

EP23 - Proof of Aliens? & Other Conspiracies: Believe it Or Not

[on this episode: Dr. Brian Boxer Wachler and Joey Svendsen]

Dr. Brian Boxer Wachler, MD started a TikTok account, began to acquire a very large following and literally became hooked.  After he started to ignore his family because of the "TikTok addiction," his wife and daughters took matters into their own hands, pointed out to him the severity of his issue and pleaded for him to get help.  Now clean from his addiction, he decided to do his own research on social media addiction and his findings are captured in his book, "Influenced: The Impact of Social Media on Our Perception."

Telling his story on media outlets such as Fox News, Dr. Brian educates others from a place of humility.  Discovering firsthand the allure of being "followed," "liked," and the ensuing Dopamine hits each exposure elicits, if it wasn't for his caring  and persistent family, the doctor may still be locked in for more Dopamine, constantly obsessing and coming back for more.   

His book outlines the dangers of social media, sometimes (as he claims) just as deadly as a gun, but it also highlights the good coming from this 21st Century invention that has changed the world, producing many out-of-control addictions like the one Dr. Brian overcame.  Dr. Brian shares his story and his findings.
