In Star Wars The Phantom Menace, Darth Maul beat Qui-Gon Jinn, and then lost to Obi-Wan Kenobi. His surprising return was revealed in The Clone Wars animated show, where we saw him as a giant mechanical spider body guy. After getting mechanical human legs, Maul went on to lead many different crime groups and syndicates to rival Palpatine.
