In this episode we continue our miniseries investigating the biblical case for social justice. We discuss the Torah’s relatively progressive vision for a social system where none need fear falling into total deprivation, and with limits on the accumulation of great wealth by any one individual or dynasty. We also discuss the degree of reality or imagination at work in the description of such a society, and whether, at the end of the day, the historicity of the account really matters one way or the other.

This episode begins a new miniseries investigating the biblical case for social justice. The Christian right likes to define “biblical justice” in purely retributive ways, but throughout the Bible there is a clear and consistent social emphasis to justice language. We discuss some of the foundational social justice texts of the Old Testament, but not before going in on both Marcion and twentieth century antisemitism. 

In the end we argue that the biblical case for social justice is clear and Christians have a responsibility to fight for the rights and dignity of all people, especially the poor and marginalized.

In this episode we break down megachurch pastor Andy Stanley’s  recently-viral comments at a ministry conference about the church’s  stance toward recognizing the mere existence of gay Christians. Many on  the Christian right see the comments as effectively an admission of  pro-LGBT views. Are they correct? We’re not so sure. But first we touch base on the fallout of the Thomas Achord controversy and ask, Why is kinism such a third rail even among pretty racist groups and organizations?
