Supplements...Oh boy! Such a wild and crazy world for sure. All you need to do is step foot into that aisle of the health food store... you know what I'm talking about. Today, it's actually more like aisles, plural.
In any case, it's a huuuuge industry and seems to only be growing. Do these supplements have any true efficacy? Should they be a part of your health regimen?
Short answer: No.

Ray is a smart and passionate man, who seems to be aging in reverse!
I was first introduced to the work Ray was doing a few years back on the Rich Roll Podcast (episode 212) and then again with Julieanna Hever (episode 345).
I guess I was a little late to the game, as Ray has been in the world of metabolic research and longevity for quite some time. He's written some really insightful papers (linked below) and he's got some new books in the pipeline as well!
I was excited to pick Ray's brain in what turned out to be the longest episode to date on the Alter Your Health podcast... and, we barely scratched the surface of what I wanted to cover. I hope Ray comes back for round 2.

Sometimes I forget how pervasive toxic beverages are in our society... but then I take a stroll down the 50 yard beverage aisle at any grocery store or gas station to be reminded of the junk out there!

In this episode we talk about the classes of beverages to definitely stay away from and why. While we don't get too deep into hydration, the obvious byproduct of staying away from these things is drinking more natural fluids (water, juice, tea, etc).

The beverages to avoid are...

Sugar sweetened beverages
Artificially sweetened beverages
Energy drinks
Coffee
Alcohol
While we can pretty well grasp why sugary and artificially sweetened beverages are important to avoid for health, we get into some good scientific reasoning when it comes to avoiding those more socially accepted stressors like coffee and alcohol!

We talk about the "inside out" nature of reality so often, and today we shed more light on what this means and how to leverage this understanding to support your health and wellbeing.
This is the opposite of victimhood, or living a disempowered life where your physical or emotional experience is subject to events or circumstances outside of yourself.

I heard a talk by Dr. John speak when I was a student in the Institute for Integrative Nutrition years ago, before starting medical school. As a yogi, Ayurvedic philosophy deeply resonated. The concepts of balance and aligning with rhythms of nature makes so much sense, and just feels good! Dr. John recommended that I see and interact with the world through an Ayurvedic lens.
Even though I haven't taken any deep dive into Ayurveda, I've allowed basic ayurvedic concepts to guide my lifestyle and clinical practice.
I was thrilled to connect with Dr. John for a deep conversation about longevity through the lens of ayurveda. It turns out that there are indeed ancient ayurvedic traditions that have now been proven to promote longevity in many ways.

Before I started this podcast, I was brainstorming about people who would be good guests for the show I envisioned. Dr. Joe Tafur was on this initial list, along with plenty of other people who may be classified more as "celebrities" in the health and wellness space.
Fast forward close to 2 years and I finally felt ready to dive into this conversation with Joe (and we finally time to actually connect for it!).
My personal connection with Ayahuasca starting back in 2012 led me learn about the work of Joe Tafur, a doctor/shaman who has vast experience with indigenous plant medicine and grounding in conventional, "western medicine."
