          • 251: Creating Change Within
Take action and start creating change from within your school building. Some questions you may want to ask yourself are: How do you find changes you want to see? How to evoke change no matter where we are? You know what should be done differently so instead of wishing and wanting, speak up! Use your ideas and voice to develop your game plan. Complaining will not make any changes; use your action and energy to make changes! Listen in to hear about how to start a plan about how to create change.
            Quotables
            • “How to create change within the building [is] not waiting for the orders to come top-down, but to initiate the change.”
            • “Life can’t just happen to you; you really have to take an active role.”
            • “You either get what you want, at least improve what you have, or you do nothing, and it just gets worse.”
            • “Stop waiting for permission from the universe.”
            • “We are starting fresh, and we are starting new; we’re gonna start a school that we always wanted it to be.”

Julie Warner, EdD, left the classroom fewer than 10 years ago—close enough that she can still vividly remember her first few rocky years with their emotional and logistical landmines, but long enough to have had a career in education since then that includes obtaining a doctorate in education from Teachers College, Columbia University, stints as an Education Policy Advisor in the U.S. Senate and the White House, and overseeing the teacher issues portfolio within the U.S. Department of Education’s internal think tank. Even as she’s advised on high-level policy decisions in education, she’s always stayed close to the classroom: she’s a National Board Certified Teacher, has published books on teaching with technology, and is a freelance education writer.Tune in to hear this bonus edition episode with Julie Warner!

                                            • One of the fall backs to a lot of coaching support is that there is just no game plan.
                                            • Have an aligned vision with administration.
                                            • Haphazardly helping people might feel good in the moment but you never get momentum.

This past year has challenged educators to look at education and learning in a new light. Do you find yourself apologizing for how you are implementing your teaching? This podcast episode speaks on our initial reaction to apologize for how we are having to change. Instead, let's reframe and hear about a better way to excite and engage our administration, coworkers, and students.  Tune in!
                                                    Quotables
                                                    • Anxious energy is a form of excitement.
                                                    • Whenever you apologize, it sends the message that whatever you're going to say or do is unimportant or unexciting.
                                                    • Apologizing for the work that we do, that we know is essential to moving forward, is actually having the opposite effect.
                                                    • Why do we apologize? It's a way to connect with the other person/state the obvious/acknowledge their thoughts or feelings.
                                                    • We have to embrace new opportunities...fun exploration, off the beaten path, is honestly where the best memories are made, when we are forced out of our routine and out of our plan.

Spencer is currently a full-time instructional coach at a K-5 elementary school and a teacher wellness mentor. She is also a former teacher. Spencer taught 2nd grade, 5th grade and 6th grade before becoming an instructional coach. Her time as a teacher taught her so much about what she wanted in life and also a lot about the role burnout plays in our health and wellness. Spencer's goal is to help teachers feel seen as a human first and create a space and community where they can turn to to receive empathy, empowerment and personal development tools. She recently got married to her long-time best friends, Tim! She has two dogs, Layla + Vladdy. Spencer was born and raised in Livonia, Michigan and then moved to Arizona after college graduation. The move sparked her love for travel, if she could live anywhere it would be on an island. You can usually find her working on mentorship, binging Schitt's Creek, or planning her next adventure !
