When you are going through those hard times, there is always a purpose behind it. You may not recognize what it is in the moment but if you stay committed to it and keep working to try and solve and get through it the best you can, one day you are going to look back and be like, “Wow! If I did not go through that, I would not be able to appreciate where I am now.”

Start small. Change one little aspect, work on one little part and when you get that, add something else to it. One day you will walk in and you are just rocking and rolling.

Once you connect with them, once you get them hooked, there is nothing that they will not do for you.

You need that piece of self-care. Yes you need to be authentic but it is sometimes hard to be authentic when you are not really understanding who you are and what you value and where you want to go in education and what you want to do with the content and your students.

I think you should be open to learn from anybody who inspires you.

What I try and do is figure out what are my values, what are my goals, what do I want to learn? Because I don’t think you can stay current in everything, there is not really a way to do that.

A lot of times kids just need to know how to be good human beings and to deal with all of these things in the current world that is just thrust upon them. Modeling how we handle situations is really important.

May 18, 2020211: Making a Difference with Kim Strobel
Kim Strobel is the owner of Strobel Education, education consultant, and motivational speaker.
She’s its driving force. Her wisdom, positivity, and strength inform every aspect—and it shows in the inspiring workshops she presents to teachers who seek to make a difference. She puts herself “in the trenches” with teachers because she was once there herself and knows how important support and encouragement are in creating a successful classroom.
A licensed ELA teacher for grades K-12, Kim has taught in classrooms at all grade levels during her almost 20 years as an education professional. She began her career teaching fourth grade, during which time she served on numerous committees devoted to improving the curriculum and culture of the schools. She next served as a K-12 Literacy Coordinator, helping to develop a school-wide plan to improve literacy achievement and implement new common core literacy standards. Kim found her next challenge as Director of Curriculum and Instruction for a school district, during which time she developed curriculum in all content areas, K-12; collaborated with teachers and administrators to identify instructional needs; and served as a liaison with state and local agencies.
Throughout her career, Kim has been recognized at the state and local level for her achievements and contributions to the education field. In 2010, she was awarded a grant from the Lilly Endowment Teacher Creativity Fellowship, which she used to study the practice of meditation and how to use it in the classroom. And most recently, she’s taken her vision of reimagining education to the national stage as a featured keynote speaker at the Innovative Schools Summit in Atlanta, and the School Discipline Conference in Las Vegas.
Kim has recently added the role of Happiness Coach to her lengthy resume. Her new business, Kim Strobel – Live Events and Retreats, guides individuals toward rediscovering their authentic selves and reclaiming their personal and professional joy. Kim sprinkles happiness tips and tricks into her education workshops, ensuring teachers reenter their classrooms with renewed purpose and passion.
Professionally, Kim’s a teacher, a consultant, a speaker, a happiness coach and an aspiring author. But her personal life is just as full. When she’s not firing up educators with her signature mix of excitement and experience, she’s a die-hard runner, an advocate for her community’s abandoned animals, and a family-oriented gal who loves spending time with her husband Scott, their four children, two grandkids, and three pups.

Even though the teachers do not have the reciprocal pay that they deserve and they certainly don’t get the pats on the back or the accolades, day after day they show up and do what is best for kids because they absolutely have a love for helping students learn to succeed in life.

Knowing how to have relationships with students, that is the X-factor.

We can boil water at 212 degrees so why would we try and boil it a 276? We are not really going to get much of an outcome.

I have stopped talking about the tools and started talking about the function. I always ask what they are trying to accomplish.

We need to make sure that what we believe about learning connects to what’s happening in the world.

So often, what we do in schools and what we do in classrooms may or may not match up to what we believe about learning.

Do our kids find joy in our classrooms and what is the source of that joy?

We never need to fix students. We need to create the spaces and the experiences that remove the barrier.

Really hone in on what you want to learn and how that impacts the learners in your classroom.

How are we celebrating all of our learners and how are we celebrating learning more than achievement?

If we really want to learn and we really want to do the best work for our kids, it isn’t just roses, it is kind of a lot of thorns too. You have to find the balance.

If you want to truly hone your leadership craft in a way that has a tremendous impact, ask the right people for feedback. You can read all the books, follow all the people, and take all the conferences, but if you do not hear from the ones you lead about how they need and want to be led better, then you’ll never transform into the most impactful leader you can become. Tune in for 3 easy steps on how to reverse the chain of command and achieve new heights in your leadership.

When I paid attention to the reaction and the response of those I was leading, I started to collect what I call intel. I used that insight to adjust my approach and my strategy.
The more that I reflect and pay attention, the better I get at adjusting in the moment.
You might have to read between some of the word choices or exaggerations but I promise you there are nuggets of truth and helpful redirection if you look closely enough.
I would apologize and rephrase what I said so that what I meant had a chance to make it to their ears and to their minds and to hearts.
You want to know what happened, when does it often occur, and what do you wish had happened instead?
The worst thing you can do is problem solve, and your next solution still is not helpful!
I’ve got to know not only what is not working but more importantly, how it is that you want it to work.
We want to repair our missteps so that we can be better faster.
When you lead people, their feedback is personal and unique.
This is a long game, it’s never over. Your feedback might change but your habit of responding to the feedback doesn’t.

During uncertain times, the overwhelm can be debilitating. By focusing on doing the next right thing, you can strategically move forward, build momentum and gain sanity. Tune in to learn a 3 part system that will help you navigate any new situation you face so that you come out on the other side successful.Quotables
You make the best decision you can at the time with the knowledge and skills that you have so don’t beat yourself up if down the path you gain insight and decide to change direction or tactics
Every moment you take what you have currently and you do your best with it and you say to yourself, “What is the next right thing I can do?”.
My action steps were to stop the pity party of how this was affecting my daily life and instead just show up serve hard.
We all have something to give right now. We all give back to the collective with a piece of knowledge or talent that we possess so strategize your action steps.
So show up, meet them where they are in the middle of their freak out. Walk them through one step on the game board at a time until they can get a breath of air.
The 3 part system is 1: Acknowledge 2: Accept 3: Act
You don’t have to know how the story ends. You don’t have to know every step along the way.

Make a schedule. Just like in the classroom where you have a very detailed schedule of what you are going to be doing at what specific time, create that for yourself.
No matter who it is that you are home with, set boundaries, rules and roles.
You don’t have to work 8 hours straight. In fact, you could be productive in less time if you are prioritizing essential tasks.
Get structured but be flexible until you find what works for you.
Set up a time where you can have a video call with your work colleagues because you are going to feel that isolation.
Have different markers (visual cue like wearing a lanyard) to help set boundaries.
Your experience over these next few weeks, or months, who knows? Is really going to begin and end with you.
This is a learning experience for a lot of us. We want to induce feelings of confidence and inspiration. We are going to just try it out, and see how it goes.
I will focus on what will have the biggest impact on my vision.
I can do hard things and I am not going to let challenges affect my attitude. I am going to do the best I can with what I have.
I am not going to worry about things that I cannot control
I am going to focus on what I can do with the time that I have and I will ask for help when I need it.
I am capable and I am worthy.
We have to start with our self-talk and our mindset first before we can move forward.
Illuminate distractions that are time sucks. Turn off your notifications.
Narrow the funnel of how you are delivering instruction and how families are communicating with you.
Set clear boundaries and add up your hours to make sure you are staying within those boundaries.
Use batching and blocking to make time for important tasks.
Prioritize your own self-care so that you can better support those that you serve.
Be mindful about what you are consuming
Connect with others
Give yourself grace
This isn’t just about your physical health but your mental health too.
Give kids a space to talk about their concerns and anxieties
