Brian chats with Dave Mabie about hunting black bears with hounds in Wisconsin. Dave runs Platt Hounds on Bear, Bobcat, Coyotes, Coons & Wolves. We chat about how he got into hunting over hounds. Dave and Brian conversate about some of the public perception issues surrounding hound hunters. 

Some other topics we touch on, WI Wolf hunt, Dog Training Regulation changes, and some history of the Platt Hounds. 

Dave also touches base on Wisconsin's learn to hunt program and his role in coordinating the black bear hunt! Dave also is part of the Wisconsin Conservation Congress (rep) and he shares some of the structure that is unique to the state. 

With the Black bear season starting on the 8th of September with hounds - Brian was super excited to chat with Dave in leu of bait hunting season opening on 9/15.

Brian chats with new upland hunter Drew Rodman (@cuttincoveys). Drew invited Amaazen Outdoors out to the Sandhills for the opener of prairie grouse season. Unfortunately due to some circumstances (bear hunting), Brian was not able to join Drew. 

Drew shares his story about his GSPs and how he got into hunting. Drew found upland hunting later in life and has now fully embraced the traveling wingshooter lifestyle. 

Drew fills us in on how his season started and what he has on the horizon for the fall.

Mike Johnson of Veterans On the Fly stops by the podcast to share what his program is doing for our men and women who served our country! We chat about his love for fly fishing and getting others into the sport.

Brian takes the podcast on the road this week to a special location on the banks of the Chippewa River. In an old northern WI bar that was originally opened in 1929 resides a custom rod builder. The nostalgia only makes a musky guy's, like Brian, stomach fill with butterflies. Looking at the legendary Chippewa River while discussing the "outlaw" fly fisherman who pursue musky, Tom and Brian, discuss the history that lead to the Predator Fly rod. 

Brian bellies up to the historic bar (rods on the right and beer coolers on the left) to interview the owner and builder of Chippewa River Custom Rods. Tom packed his bags at 31 and moved over to northern Wisconsin with Musky guide Brad Bohen. Tom was one of the early pioneers to run drift boats on WI rivers to chase musky on the fly. Tom started building custom rods at age ten. Then shortly after moving to Wisconsin, he started Chippewa River Custom Rod. He also went to work for St Croix as an at-home wrapper for a couple of years. Last November he closed the doors to the old tavern and move rod production in. The Robert Tomes book Musky on the Fly is one of the earliest mentions of Tom's rods.

In this episode, Brian and his little brother recap a week of highs and lows fishing the rivers in Wisconsin the first week of August. 

Fishing was good for smallmouth and musky. However, Brian had some black clouds hanging overhead. Lost a gopro, broke a rod, broke an oar, hooking Jeff (twice), and a few other issues.
