  • The Amazing Spider-Man #1000 – REVIEW

“What I want, I take. I am RAVAGE.”

On this episode, Mark and Dan discuss Amazing Spider-Man #1000, which is technically issue #36 of Volume 7.

The primary story of this issue, entitled “Ravaged,” was written by Joe Kelly. The cover features artwork by John Romita Jr., Paolo Rivera, Pepe Larraz, and Marte Gracia. The primary story features artwork by Pepe Larraz, colors by Federico Blee, designs by Jay Bowen, and, of course, letters by VC’s Joe Caramagna. This issue was first released on September 30th, 2026.

The issue also contains backup stories led by the creative teams of Noah Hawley and Patrick Gleason, on “Still Standing,” JM DeMatteis and Humberto Ramos, on “Requiem of a Goblin,” Frank Miller and Peach Momoko, on “Tears of the Spider-Queen,” Triple H and Ed McGuinness, on “The Big Night,” Brian Michael Bendis and Stuart Immonen, on “The Gesture,” Larry Lieber and Giuseppe Camuncoli, on “Of Webs and Six-Guns,” and Dan Slott and Marcos Martin on “I Can Never Rest.” And, it’s important to note, especially in a book packed with content, this collection of stories was edited by Nick Lowe. • “Heroes Don’t Cry” 25th Anniversary (w/ guest Paul Jenkins)

In this episode, Dan is joined by writer Paul Jenkins for a special discussion of his classic story “Heroes Don’t Cry” from Peter Parker: Spider-Man (vol. 1) #35, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary of publication on September 19th, 2026.

The story, featuring artwork by Mark Buckingham and Wayne Faucher, follows a child named LaFronce, his drug-addicted mother, and his imaginary encounters with Spider-Man. It tackled difficult but important themes regarding drug addiction, parenting, race, and the adoption system in America, amongst other things, and has since become an important comic not only in Spider-Man’s legacy, but across the medium, particularly for its inclusion of the first portrayal of Spider-Man as a black man.

If you haven’t read the story for yourself, it’s available digitally on Marvel Unlimited and for purchase and can be found for a reasonable price from back-issue retailers.

Rick Coste edited this episode. Alex Galucki edited the video version of this podcast. Our artwork is handcrafted by artists Ron Frenz, Nick Cagnetti, and the late Sal Buscema. Our theme songs were produced by Ryland Bojack, Tony Thaxton, and Spider-Maj. Our animated introduction to the show is by Josh Sutton of Panels to Pixels.
