SUBSCRIBE to our YouTube Channel to view the latest and past AMERICAN REAL episodes: http://bit.ly/2zVQDLO

Welcome to our 79th episode of American Real. This week, we bring you Martin Bidney, Professor Emeritus of English and Comparative Literature at Binghamton University. A prolific author, he has published over twenty books on the subject of poetry, including his own original works. Martin is a veritable archeologist of literature having unearthed long and forgotten disused forms of poetry by employing them into his craft. Because of his poetic style, energy and personality, I liken our guest this week to a modern-day Dr. Seuss. Be prepared to learn some history about poetry style, lost forms of poetry and many other poetic anecdotes along the way.

This week on American Real, we bring you a story of a dark underground reality on a subject not often discussed... human trafficking, which exists right here in our country. Salka Valerio is our featured guest and her story begins in an abusive household where at the young age of thirteen she attempted to take her own life by way of suicide. A year later, Salka ran away from home before ending up in the hands of human traffickers. Her living nightmare continued for five years, taking her from one trafficker to another who all instilled fear and preyed on her vulnerability forcing her into prostitution. I can only give praise to Salka who went through so much, yet had the courage and determination to find a way to escape before starting her life anew. Today, she works in law enforcement helping those in need and working to eliminate human trafficking.

On this week’s show, American Real sets up our studio in what Chris Mazzilli calls his “living room” better known as the
Gotham Comedy Club, located in the heart of New York City. The visionary and co-founder sits down for an in-depth conversation bringing us back to his childhood where it all began when his father took him to see the legendary Don Rickles for his first comedy show, which he admits is in-part the reason the club exists. From Jerry Seinfeld, Amy Schumer, Dave Chappelle and Lewis Black, the Gotham is a New York City favorite for laughter.

Chis discusses the relationships he built over the years with some of the most famous comedians in history like the late David Brenner and Robin Williams, as well as having a small part in supporting more recent up-and-coming success stars, like Sebastian Maniscalco.

This episode was filmed in New York City on November 30, 2018.
