Recently, I sat at the mic on the kitchen table with my friend Paul Talley…

Paul and his wife, Suzi, joined us for the filming of the complete Amplify course. As we pushed through the material, Paul made a few interesting observations. Here’s one:

“We did this backwards!” he exclaimed. “We have a book, but we’ve been doing this high-level coaching. There’s so much more we can EASILY add to our ecosystem.”

When you’re waiting for coaching clients, you’re dependent on big ticket sales. Those are great… when they come in.

And, whereas you don’t want to eliminate these from your funnel, you DO want to create easier on-ramps for people. That is, you want to serve them at multiple levels, effectively creating a path for them to receive as little— or as much— attention as they want without the “all or nothing approach.”

During the film-shoot, Paul saw how he could easily transform his coaching into courses, his courses into books, and he could more readily “scale” his organization, thereby creating multiple streams of income…

… without having to “come up” with new material. Rather, he could repurpose EVERYTHING he already had.

Remember, amplification isn’t about “creating more stuff.” Unless you want and need more stuff. Rather, application is about placing a megaphone on the content you already have— and continuing to develop it— so you can multiply & monetize your message.

It’s a bit odd that the “building online” conversation almost always shifts immediately to social media— to space you don’t own.

In this talk we outline four reasons you should build where you do own (your website) while ALSO leveraging the power of social media.

Here are the four points we hit:

🤷‍♂️ #1 = You don’t know where they’ll be sent next

When people leave your site and go to social media, they’re bombarded with additional messages. You might agree with the political, personal, or theological stance… or not. This is true whether you’ve shared a video, a text-based post, or a graphic. And, it’s true whether you’re in a regular newsfeed or a group.

🤷‍♂️ #2 = On social media… you are the commodity

The platforms are free, yet the owners are millionaires and billionaires.

How so?

Advertising.

The platforms collect masses of data and sell it to advertisers who pay for access TO YOU and to YOUR AUDIENCE.

🤷‍♂️ #3 = Temporary vs permanence

Every platform is temporary. That is, at some point they all go the way of MySpace and Periscope. And, though we don’t envision any of them disappearing at any point in the near future, you need to build on what you own— not something given to you to access for free.

🤷‍♂️ #4 = You can be shut down, hidden, etc.

Finally, even if the platforms stay, you can be pushed off. You can find yourself suspended temporarily (by “fact checkers”), or you can find yourself removed permanently.

Groups get shut down, profiles get hacked (and hidden), and the landscape changes.

We’re not against social media. Not at all.

But, you do need to understand what it is and how it works as you begin building in the online space.

⭐️ #5 = Low cost with high return.

You don’t have to spend a chunk of cash to write a book. The greatest investment is your time.

⭐️ #4 = Multi-directional reach (go broader, deeper, and longer).

A book allows you to say far MORE than what you can say in a talk, it allows you to reach beyond the audience of people who don’t know you, etc.

⭐️ #3 = People like physical products— even in a digital age.

Even though we’re in a digital (and increasingly mobile) age, people still like things— like books— they can hold in their hands.

⭐️ #2 = Books convey authority and expertise.

Books open doors, then, that other things don’t open. People give you the benefit of the doubt— in the beginning— if you’ve written a book. There’s a certain status that accompanies them.

⭐️ #1 = The disciple of writing the book provides you with everything you need to amplify your message— in a systematic way.

A few years ago, I sat with a pastor-friend. He wasn’t sure how to “amplify” his message.

Oddly enough, ministers are some of the best content creators— they share new ideas every week, they’re in the discipline of doing a fantastic job when they do, and they speak passionately as if they’re message truly matters (I believe it does!).

However, the pastor hadn’t made the leap to see how he could “run the same play” I was running to share my business talks online.

Later, I shifted.

I didn’t want to just talk business; I wanted to help people find + fulfill their purpose. But, I was then able to take what I learned from the business world, use the same processes, and share a more valuable message.

In other words, the same processes that work actually work in every area… regardless of what you’re teaching.

And, rather than having to “create more stuff” you can amplify what you already have.

At the end of this talk, Beth tossed me a curve ball and asked about time-blocking. Whereas most people work in time-slivers, I work in chunks of time. This enables me to STOP juggling and truly focus.

When you juggle, the balls spend more time “out” of your hands than they do “in.” If you simply “hold” them, you touch them longer, and there’s less— or no— “air time.”

The same lesson applies in life.

Don’t let perfect be the enemy of published.

But, don’t let poor-performance be a trap to not strive for professionalism, either.

(We’ve seen both extremes.)

One of the best ways to begin… it to just begin. And begin with the tools you have.

Many content creators assume they need the best tech, the latest gadgets, and some new-fangled software.

Even today, we use a BUNCH of “out of the box” resources…

👉 iPad, with Voice Memos and a simple, $100 mic to run the podcast

Begin where you are, and continue building up and getting better.

In this episode we also talk about a few lessons Andy learned by self-publishing a book several years ago, at the same time a friend worked through a publisher.

Andy made more (10x as much), he received his money in advance, and he was able to keep developing his message because the publisher— who bought his book in bulk— didn’t own the rights.

This led him to edit + enhance + expand…

In fact, all of the lessons in Amplify can be traced back to this moment.

Most of the time your book— or course or other creation— doesn’t “turn out” exactly like you envisioned it…

If you work through the process— and don’t quit— the process of aggregating the parts, assembling and re-assembling them, adjusting and re-adjusting… the end result is most often FAR BETTER than you originally intended. 

In this episode, we discuss how that process works, as well as take a deeper look at what it means to “solve a problem and step people towards their potential.” You see, not ALL problems are negative. 

Then, we discuss the importance of refining that message on your website— not social media. Yes, there’s a definite time and place for social media, but… first things first.
