Dwarka – Krishna’s Dream City in the Lap of the Ocean
After the slaying of the tyrant Kansa in Mathura, Shri Krishna and Balarama ushered in a new era of justice and peace. Yet, destiny had greater plans for Krishna. As his fame spread far and wide, so did the threats from enemies. Jarasandha, the powerful king of Magadha and father-in-law of Kansa, vowed revenge. Again and again, he attacked Mathura with massive armies. Each time, Krishna and Balarama defended the city, but the repeated assaults put the lives of innocent citizens at risk.
Krishna, the supreme strategist, knew that true leadership was not only about defeating enemies but also about protecting his people. He resolved to establish a new, secure city—a divine abode where his people could live in prosperity, peace, and safety. Thus was born Dwarka, the golden city in the embrace of the sea.
According to the Bhagavatam, Krishna sought the help of Vishwakarma, the celestial architect, to create this magnificent city. Vishwakarma agreed, but only if the sea god, Samudra Deva, would grant land. Krishna prayed, and the ocean complied, offering a vast stretch of land on its shores. Upon this sacred ground, Dwarka was built—a city that stood as a symbol of beauty, grandeur, and divine vision.
Dwarka was unlike any city known to mankind. Its streets were wide and paved with crystal. Palaces of gold, silver, and precious stones shone brilliantly under the sun. Lotus-filled lakes, lush gardens, and towering mansions adorned every corner. The city was divided into grand sections for the Yadava clans, ensuring harmony and prosperity for all.
At the heart of Dwarka stood Krishna’s own palace, exquisitely decorated and radiating divine brilliance. Here, alongside his beloved queens such as Rukmini, Satyabhama, and Jambavati, Krishna ruled as a king, yet remained ever the humble protector of dharma.
Dwarka was more than just a city—it was Krishna’s dream, a haven for his people. It became the cultural and spiritual heart of the Yadavas, where devotion, music, and joy thrived. From here, Krishna guided the destiny of India, supporting the Pandavas in their struggle for justice and shaping the course of the Mahabharata.
Yet Dwarka’s story carries both splendor and sorrow. While it was a city of divine beauty, it was also destined, in the great cosmic plan, to one day sink into the ocean after Krishna’s departure from the earthly realm. Even today, legends say that remnants of Dwarka lie submerged beneath the Arabian Sea, a testimony to its eternal connection with the divine.
The tale of Dwarka teaches us that true greatness lies in selfless protection, vision, and love for one’s people. Krishna, as king, was not merely a ruler but a guide, guardian, and beloved friend of his devotees.
In this episode, we journey to **Dwarka—the city in the lap of the sea, Krishna’s dream kingdom—**a place that continues to inspire faith, devotion, and wonder for generations.
