  • Cup o' Joy: School Raising Money to Cover Service Dog's Surgeries

Students and teachers from a Maine Elementary school are raising money for their service dog who has had a “ruff” year.

The school has started a GoFundMe to help pay for Ory, the service dog’s three surgeries. The goal of the “Pennies for Paws” fundraiser is $20,000, which is needed to cover the operations. According to WABI5, the community has also launched a webpage to help bring in more money.

The 16-month-old has hip dysplasia, degenerative hips and two torn ACLs. Jess Jones, an Ed Tech at the Willard School, expressed that the surgery will help improve the pup’s quality of life once the pain is gone.

“She’s only 16 months and she deserves that opportunity to have a great life,” Christen Suratt, a teacher at the school told WMTW. “The vet said her life will be amazing once this is done and dealt with.”

Ory has been a huge asset to the school by helping students with special needs calm down when having emotional outbursts.

Research suggests that therapy/service dogs can decrease stress and give students emotional support. Some other benefits of using therapy dogs include helping to improve social cues and teach empathy in students.

Studies also prove that student’s have a reduction of stress and less anxiety when around a therapy dog.

  • Cup o' Joy: Frat Brothers Pay Off Mortgage For Their House Cook 30 Years Later

Former fraternity brothers from Louisiana State University stepped up in a massive way to help their house cook.

Once Phi Gamma Delta alumni found out their house cook was still working two jobs to pay off her mortgage, they decided to help out. According to The Advocate, they surprised her with $51,765 just before her birthday calling it "Jesse Hamilton Day."

"They were my kids. They still are," Hamilton told the Washington Post. "They used to tell me they loved me, and now, they've proved it."

From 1982 to 1996 she worked for the "FIGI" house where she would start her shift at 4am to prepare and cook all the meals for the day. In addition to making the food, she would also act as a mother figure to the men by always listening and giving them rides when needed.

"I enjoyed doing it. They loved my cooking," Hamilton said. " I was always there to talk things through with them. They'd come in the kitchen and sit on top of the counter and tell me their problems."

After many years, she still stayed in touch with a few of the men, including 52-year-old Andrew Fusaiotti. After talking to Hamilton's kids, he found out she still owed $45,000 for her mortgage. Hamilton was still working hard at her jobs to pay it off.

Fusaiotti started contacting his fraternity brothers and before you know it,  91 brothers donated around $560 each for Hamilton.

"That shows how they all felt about her. Jessie is one of these people that shows up to work and always has a smile on her face, eager to please and never complains," Fusaiotti told Washington Post. "She is the type of person that inspires me, people that don't have a lot, but give a lot. She's the most giving person you've ever met."

  • Cup o' Joy: Uber Driver Gets College Degree Thanks to Passenger

An Uber driver's dream of getting a college degree came true thanks to one of her passengers.

Latonya Young, a 43-year-old single mother worked as a hair stylist during the day and an Uber driver by night.

One night, she picked up a passenger outside Mercedes-Benz Stadium where she began telling him her life story.

At the age of 16, Young had to drop out of high school to raised her first child. She recently was enrolled at Georgia State University but had to drop out due to an unpaid balance of $700.

"Every time I got ready to pay the money, my kids needed something. I said, ‘OK, I'll just wait," Young told Channel 2’s Berndt Petersen.

A couple days after that ride, she got a call from her former university.

"And the message stated, 'You can register for classes now.' I was literally blown away. A stranger has never done that or done anything like that for me," Young said.

The stranger was her former Uber passenger, Kevin Esch. He even attended her graduation.

"When he paid the balance, I had to do this for him," Young shared. "I maintained my grades. As and Bs. Just trying to do everything to make sure he knows I appreciate him."

She received an associate's degree in criminal justice and is currently pursuing her bachelor's degree where she plans to one day become a lawyer.

"This one changed my life. That one ride," Young said.
