1. be bounded by 被束缚于 

第一句歌词是一个问句How can one become so bounded by choices that somebody else makes?

be bounded/bound by 被困于，被束缚在

be bound to do 注定做某事或成为

“be bound to”是主观上的，人为的一种意念，在人思维逻辑的一种推理下，得出：嗯、这事儿势必会、一定会怎么怎么样，此外这个词组还带有义务的意思；

例如：

西部大开发一定能成为沟通世界各国和中国的一座桥梁，促进中国和世界经济共同发展，共同繁荣。

2. blow one's mind 让某人大为吃惊

歌词中唱到When I was a child every single thing could blow my mind

blow one's mind(away) 让某人大吃一惊

但什麼叫「它吹我的腦袋」？

其實 blow 在這裡是「炸掉」

所謂「把我的腦袋炸掉」是「讓我感到很震撼」的意思

通常是你聽到一件以前從未聽說過的事，或是學到一個新知識時的反應

它有很多變化形式

比如可以變成形容詞 mind-blowing (令人震撼的)

用在像是 a mind-blowing fact

或是用被動語態 My mind is/was blown. (字面上：我的腦袋被炸開了)

也可以簡單地說 Mind blown. (和上句意思一樣，比較簡化的說法)

下次你學到一個新知識或知道一件沒聽過的事，又感到很震驚時

就可以說 It’s blowing my mind!

如果是過去得知的事就可以說 It blew my mind!

有點類似中文說的「大開眼界」，但還要再驚訝一點

3. soak up 吸收（液体）

歌词中唱到 Soaking it all up for fun but now I only soak up wine

soak up 吸收液体 take in liquid 

soak的以及是浸透了，如果说 I am soaked. 被雨淋成落汤鸡。 

4. none the 一点也不

歌词中唱到 But the higher we climb feels like we're both none the wiser

none the wiser 不是什么智者, 还是不明白

none the + 比较级 = not... at all 全无，一点也不

5. get over oneself 不自以为是

歌词中不断唱到So I hope I learn to get over myself, 这也是歌者最重要的人生态度。

get over onself 英文的解释是stop thinking that you are so important; to stop being so serious.

所以就是不要自以为是或不要太当真. 因此这句话也可以理解为学会与自己和解

1. Mr. Know it all 自以为是先生 

歌名Mr. Know It All 可以翻译成”自以为是先生”或者“万事通先生”。

Know-it-all字面上的意思好像是全部都懂，但是它其实暗含贬义和讽刺。

Know-it-all is a person who thinks he or she knows everything.

也就是表达那些自以为自己知道很多东西的人，自以为是的百事通。所以常用在贬义哦！

英语例句：

OK, if you're such a know-it-all, you try and do it, then.

行吧，你要真是个“万事通”，那你去试，你去做呗。

2. bring someone down 打击，让某人难过

歌词中唱到Well you like to bring me down, don’t ya?

bring some down 有两个意思，一是打倒，击垮，二是make someone unhappy 让某人难过。这里显然是第二个意思。 

3. make a fool out of someone 让某人出丑

make a fool out of someone = make fool of someone 让某人出丑

联想到另外一个带fool的短语 Nobody’s fool字面意思就是“没有人的傻瓜”。看看英语解释：Someone who cannot easily be fooled, swindled, or taken advantage of，指的是那些不易被愚弄、欺骗或利用的人。

因此，Nobody’s fool也就是精明机智的人，不易上当的人。

4. not know a thing about 对某事一无所知

not know a thing about = not know the first thing about 对某事一无所知

比如not know the first thing about……这个绝不可以理解为不知道第一件事，而是指对……一窍不通的含义。

例：I don't know why you asked Rob.He doesn't know the first thing abou computer.

若从字义上要了解这个词组，你可能直译为“不知道关于…的第一件事”。不过，你可能要把意思稍微扭转一下，“知道第一件事”其实是对事情最粗浅的了解，如果连对“某事最粗浅的了解”都没有，那么就是对某事“一窍不通”了。这句话的意思是"Rob对计算机一窍不通，搞不清楚你为什么要问他"。

5. get the world at one feet 极其成功，万众拥戴

get the world at one feet 英文解释就是to be extremely successful and admired by a large number of people 极其成功，万众拥戴

例句：Five years after her debut, the diminutive star of the Royal Ballet has the world at her feet.

1. ain't 万能否定 

 歌曲的名称是two out of three ain't bad. 三样当中有两样也不错。至于三个当中的两个到底指的是什么，歌词中会找到答案。这里我们着重说ain't.

    如果你常看原版电影或者听英文歌曲的话，您很可能会发现ain't这个词在口语中很常用，但在正式的刊物中却很少看到。Ain't是以下词语的缩写：am not，is not，are not，has not，have not。简单来说就是一个万能否定词。

   ain't只是一种非正式的口语说法，过去ain't只有在社会经济地位较低的人群中使用。受过良好教育的人是一般不会使用这个词的。现在没有那么明显了，美国人口语中常会出现ain't.

   再有就是ain't经常用在双重否定里，例如后面歌词还有一句"But that ain't getting us nowhere"这里的ain't应为is not 的缩写。那么整句句子就变成"that is not getting us nowhere."从正式的英语语法来说，就是"That is getting us somewhere."的意思。然而这句话其实是强调不会有所进展。这样的一个用法更能说明原本使用ain't的人群往往对于正式的英语语法非常的不在意。

歌词中有一段很精彩的类比 Analogy ：

做一个铺垫。你非要找根本不可能得到的东西 

Analogy是英语修辞的一种，通过对两种不同事物的比较找到当中相同的点。Analogy和simile, metapher都涉及到comparison，但不同点在于明喻和暗喻主要是通过生动的想象力增加比较的效果，而类比更多是通过比较达到在劝说和解释的功能，而且analogy的比较不讲究逻辑性更侧重情感面。 

1. save sb from sth (doing sth) 使某人免于某事 

歌词中唱到this year to save me from tears. 今年为了避免再次流泪伤心。

save sb from sth (doing sth) 使某人免遭某事

英文解释为To liberate or deliver someone  from a dangerous or threatening person, thing, place, or situation。

例句：She managed to save the hostages from the gunman without anyone getting hurt.

她成功地从枪手手中解救了人质无人受伤。

2. once bitten twice shy 一朝被蛇咬十年怕井绳

有了last Christmas的糟糕经历，歌者今年对于感情的态度就是once bitten, twice shy

 “once bitten, twice shy” 的意思是 “在第一次做某件事情时，有了不愉快的经历，因此第二次再做时会害怕、小心或忧虑”，类似于汉语里说的 “一朝被蛇咬，十年怕井绳”。

例句：Since Debbie broke up with her boyfriend, she’s become very cautious about starting a new relationship. It’s a case of once bitten, twice shy.
自从黛比和男友分手之后，对于开展新的恋情就变得很犹豫。真是一朝被蛇咬，十年怕井绳。

3. wrap it up 打包，结束

歌词中唱到包礼物的时候用到了wrap it up

4. rely on sb 依靠某人

歌词中唱到I thought you were Someone to rely on Me?

rely on sb 依靠某人

英文里还有另外两个依靠的短语分别是depend on 和 count on，这三个短语的侧重点并不相同。

depend on着重指客观事实，诸如能力、财力等不得不“依靠”或“指望”; rely on常侧重从人品、感情方面“依赖”“信赖”。count on更着重强调指望的意思。例如:

1）My wife and children depend on me.

我的妻子和孩子都得依靠我。

2）One can always rely on him to be polite and do the right thing.

人们都相信他会彬彬有礼，行事得体。

3）I'll count on it.

我就指望它了。

5. a shoulder to cry on 倾诉的对象

中文里我们会说：“能借你的肩膀用一下吗？”这是口语会话中向对方寻求安慰的一个常见说法。

而在英文里，“a shoulder to cry on 可以依偎着哭泣的肩膀”的含义和上面提到的说法相近，意思是“愿意倾听苦衷、提供慰藉的人”。

例句

Just so you know - if you ever need a shoulder to cry on, I’m around.
顺便说一声，如果你需要找个人倾诉苦衷，我随时可以来到你身旁。

6. tear sb apart 使某人肝肠寸断

歌词中唱到A man under cover but you tore me apart。

tear sb apart 使某人非常难过，肝肠寸断

例句：Seeing her so upset really tore him apart.

1. come around 到来，发生，想通了 

歌词中用第二人称you来指代bad habits. Every time you come around 每次坏习惯来访的时候。

come around 到来，发生

例句：May I come around in the morning? Yes please do.  我可以上午来拜访你吗？可以，请来吧。

另外come around也可以表示改变立场，想通了。Give him some time. He will come around.

2. lead to sth 导致，造成，通向

歌词中不止一次用到了lead to, "my bad habits lead to you","my bad habits lead to late nights"等。lead to sth 导致，造成；通向

例句：Eating too much sugar can lead to health problem. 食用过多的糖会引起健康问题。

All roads lead to Rome．条条道路通罗马。　　

3. barely 几乎不，勉强

在描述酒精作用和彻夜狂欢这些bad habits造成的乱象时，歌词中唱到conversations with a stranger I barely know. 

barely 几乎不，勉强

barely 这个否定副词翻译成 仅仅，勉强；几乎不，几乎没有，其实这个词表达的是一种几乎快要不行了，其实还可以的感觉。

I can barely trust you. 我几乎无法相信你了（但还是信了）

I can barely move. 我快动不了了（其实还是能动）

4. way out 出口，出路

Ed在歌中唱到I was looking for a way out, now I can't escape. 

way out = exit 出口

way out 出路，摆脱困境的办法

例句：The only way out for rural children to go to school.

农村孩子上学是条唯一的出路。

5. nothing happens after two 午夜过后没好事儿

nothing happens after two这句歌词会让人想到美剧How I Met Your Mother第一季中的episode 18 Nothing Good Happens After 2 a.m. 这句话实际上来自于美国父母常说给孩子听的一句话nothing good ever happens after midnight。意思是让这些青少年早点儿回家，别在外面瞎混。

6. go too far 过分了，过火了

歌词中唱到I only know how to go too far

go too far 做得太过分了，太过火了

类似的说法还有 be too much 或者 cross the line. 

1. what if 假如...会怎样 

What if 是歌曲中出现频率最高的短语。在英语中what if 有三种用法。

what if 假如...会怎么样，也是我们最常见的what if 的用法。后面可以跟一般陈述句，也可以接虚拟语气。

What if they find the coin first? 要是他们先找到硬币该怎么办呢？

what if 表示建议或邀请，意思是“如果...怎么样”。歌词中几个what if的句子就是这个意思。

what if we run away? 你觉得我们逃离怎么样？

与so搭配表示不重要，不在乎

So what if we are a littble bit late? 我们晚一点儿到又能怎么样呢？

口语对话中，so what if ... 可能会被简化成so what. 

2. safe and sound 安然无恙 

歌词中what if we say goodbye to safe and sound

safe 是指安全的意思，而sound，sound最常见的意思是指「听起来」。例：It sounds good. 意思是指听起来很好的意思。

但你可别以为safe and sound跟「听」有关喔。因为sound 当作形容词时，是指完好的、无损伤的意思。

safe and sound 「完好无缺、安全无恙」

Taylor Swift曾经出过一首歌曲就叫safe and sound,是影片hunger games的主题曲。

3. lose one's mind 失去理智 

lose one's mind 就是失去理智了

常见同意短语 lose one's mind / go crazy / go insane 

Why are you doing this, are you losing your mind?! 

Have you gone crazy? 

 Are you going insane

你也可以用 lose one's marbles 來形容失去理智的人 相反地，我们用 keep sane 來保持理智

I need some time away from the kids to keep me sane. / keep my sanity

4. trip 轻快地行走 

Trippin' on skies sippin' waterfalls 是一句我很喜欢的歌词

根据trip的不同用法我觉得这句歌词可以有两种不同的理解。首先Trip当动词来用，它可以是「轻快地行走」，trip on the sky 翻译成轻快地游走在天空中非常合理。

如果我们把trip on看做是一个搭配trip on/over sth表示被什么东西给绊倒了，The old man tripped on the stone 老人被石头绊倒了。

两个人游走天际之间，被云朵绊倒，相视哈哈大笑的场景是不是也很美妙呢？

5. cross one's fingers 期待好运 

歌词中唱到cross your fingers here we go 

大家都知道，cross是交叉的意思，fingers是手指；cross one's fingers, 字面意思是手指交叉，实际上就是希望得到好运气的意思。"To cross one's fingers is a hand gesture commonly used to wish for luck 美国人经常把食指和中指交叉，意思就是祝你好运! I cross my fingers, hoping the weather would be good this weekend. 我交叉手指，希望这个周末会有好天气。

这个短语也用作have one's fingers crossed. 

1. be done with 受够了 

歌词中I'm so done with thinking through，这里的be done with与完成没有任何关系。

be done with sb or sth 受够了某人或某物

在英语里，当我们说“be done with”的时候，并不是说“完成了一件事情或任务”，而是感叹这件事情特别枯燥、无聊，让人厌倦，再也不想干了，就好比汉语里所说的“受够了”。

2. cross the line 过分了 

cross the line, 它的意思是“逾越了分寸、做得过分”。

从字面上理解，穿越了界线，跨过了界线，不正喻意“逾越了分寸”吗？。

If you say someone crosses the line, you mean what he or she has done is too fulsome and does not suit with his or her status. 

3. what's the point 有什么意义呢？ 

歌词中What's the point in saying that

point在这里的意思不是“点”或“指出”（而是“重点”或“关键的时刻／事情”，所以如果你听到人说the point is...这就是“重点是”的意思. 事实上what's the point 意思是类似，“你到底在讲什么？”，“你讲这些，有个重点吗？”。这句话相当有攻击性，所以不可以随便用，但如果你要催人，或者你对人很生气，又或者想指出你不明白那个人的逻辑，而且很嫌弃他的的逻辑和想法，你就可以用这句话。

歌词中Guess I'm stuck with you and that's that，看来我摆脱不掉你了，就这么着吧。

They picked all the functional equipment and I am stuck with this shit. 

5. for the better 好转，向好的方向发展 

歌词里唱到When it don't work out for the better.

通常的搭配就是change for the better, 这里用的是work out for the better, 意思差不多。如果我们的关系不能向好的方向发展，不要也罢。 

6. take it personal 感觉受到针对 

歌词中 I try staying cold, but you take it personal 

take it personal = take it personally 把某事放在心上，感觉受到了针对

其实这个短语否定式用的很多don't take it personal 别放在心上，这不是针对你。

I know he raises vioce at you. Don't take it personally. He is just in bad mood.

keep from 本身就有隐瞒，阻止，免于的意思。

2. before one's time 过早 

歌词中唱到feel I'm getting old, before my time. 整个这句歌词可以翻译成未老先衰

例句：

B: "No, sorry, it's before my time."

A：你看过这部剧么？B：对不起，没看过，太早了。 

3. go easy on 温和对待，节制消费 

歌词中唱到 go easy on my conscience 不要过分苛责我的良心。

1. go easy on someone or something的意思是温和有耐心地对待某人或某事。

例句：Go easy on my friend. It's her first time doing this.

别对我的朋友那么苛刻，这是她第一次做这件事情。

2.  Go easy on something还有一个意思，就是“少量地用某物”

例句：She's been going easy on the salt when she cooks or eats out.

她做饭或者在外面吃的时候都要少吃盐。

4. take the blame 承担过错，背锅 

take the blame 接受谴责，承担过错, 背锅

同样作为“接受某物”的意义，take 将谴责(blame)或责任(responsibility)作为宾语，变成了 take the blame 或 take the responsibility。

例句：

You might take the blame for something you didn'tdo.
你可能在背负莫须有的罪名。

5. rest assured 肯定，放心 

歌词中唱到 Rest assured my angel will catch my tear. 

rest assured (v.) 肯定，放心

说明：常用於祈使句，其句型為 Rest assured that/You can rest assured that + 名詞子句，其中 assured 為形容詞，意為「有把握的；自信的；肯定的」。

例句：

You can rest assured that your daughter will be happy here. (你可以放心，你女兒在這裡會快樂的)

Rest assured that we will do our best. (請放心，我們會盡最大努力)

6. homeward bound 归乡的，往家里走的 

歌曲最后唱到Once you've found that lover you homeward bound.

例句：I'd be homeward bound even before you arrived  你还没到我就往家走了。

迪士尼曾经出品过两部关于狗狗回家的电影就叫做Homeward Bound.
