Anime Shmanime

 We are four seasons deep on Dragonball Z and I can't believe we aren't even halfway yet. This season we get Trunks, Androids, Vegeta and Bulma as an item and a lot more of the same-same that Dragonball Z has to offer. Considering how little we get of Android 18 in this season, we spend a lot of time talking about the impact she had on horny young people (named Mikey). Some mercy was afforded to Jordy and skipped the filler episodes, but we couldn't pass up discussing Goku and Piccolo's driving test ordeal.  Today we are going deep on Made in Abyss! This show is unique if nothing else. It's like a bizarro world Ghibli movie – chibi and whimsical, yet dark and deeply, deeply disturbing. Disturbing even further because all this trauma is experienced by very young children. Mikey is vibing hard (no surprises here), Jordy is able to get past the trauma for the sake of whimsy, and Jay has a downright hard time. When we disagree, we laugh a lot and have a great time. In this episode we go to the depths and come back a little deformed.

 Tokyo Revengers is a powerhouse. There's a lot about this show that doesn't scream 'Anime', as if the writers of Sons of Anarchy were hired. The characters have great depth and growth, the drama is thick and mysterious, and the fight scenes are realistically choreographed (aside from some magic kicks and excessive, consecutive steel pipes to the head). Everything about this show is endearing and we had a great time getting into it... and I think we did pretty good at holding back about the theory of time travel.

 Dragonball Z part 3. This arc is arguably a turning point for the show. It has more Frieza, more Goku, more fights, and a first look at a real Super Saiyan. Of course DBZ is never without it's goofy, slapstick humour whether intentional or not... Jay calls it "levity". We laugh our way through this season of this highly revered and influential show and we will continue to do so as we drag this series out... but that's on brand for Dragonball Z.

Another Mamoru Hosoda film this week... It's Wolf Children. Not sure it counts as a classic but it's definitely on brand for him. At it's core, this is the story of a single mom and her two children trying to find their way in a world they don't belong to. BUT... at it's other core, it's about a woman who sleeps with a wolf and has to deal with the repercussions of that decision. Tune in to hear us try to make sense of the intricacies of human/wolf relations.

 It's high time we dig into a Magical Girl series, and what better introduction than Card Captor Sakura? She makes it look easy to catch 'Clow Cards'... probably because it just kinda is? At the very least she's the best dressed in the magical girl game. I would have filed this show under "Not For Grown-Ass Humans" but as we learn, Anime transcends genres where western animation does not (Paw Patrol files FIRMLY away in that category).  The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is another film whose name is known to even the most fringe anime fans (this means Jordy). This is largely because of the work of Mamoru Hosoda the films director. We spend a lot of time debating the effectiveness of the time travel mechanism(s?) specific to this film, and we go TOO DEEP about time travel in general. It was fun as hell but I don't think we solved any paradoxes... unless a magical walnut could actually do the trick.

 I don't want to talk about this show anymore... Monster Musume is... well it's fucked up. It is a little funny how absurd it is, but it pushes the boundaries of comfort for MOST of us.  Here we go again! Season 2 of Dragonball Z. It's a shame we couldn't do 2 and 3 in one episode, but Jordy has made it clear he can only withstand so much torture (and if it wasn't clear... it is now having been the one to write this.). In this season, said torture takes the form of the Ginyu Force, Friesa, drawn out battles with power-ups, and Bulma just generally doing some bullshit. We have a good time digging holes in DBZ and filling them in like we're training to join the Ginyu Force.

Going into Redline with no expectations is a best case scenario... It really makes an impact! It's a cyberpunk race and it's cool as shit. It's got some dumb names, some OP characters, a hint of magic and one prominent nude scene... it's undeniably exciting from top to bottom. Don't be a giant nuclear baby... watch this film and go through it with us after.
