  • 087 - eBooks & Audiobooks & Libraries, Oh my!

In Episode 87, Gen and Jette talk all things alternative to purchasing physical copies of books. We chat e-books, audiobooks, apps, and more. There's a lot of library love in this episode and all around appreciation for all the different ways we can experience books!

    Show Notes

This episode was inspired by a few of our old blog posts: "4 Audiobooks and E-readers that Make Reading More Accessible,"  "5 Ways to Read Sustainably,"  and "How to Read More Books."

We love our Kobo e-readers so much and highly recommend for any Canadian who also wants to borrow ebooks from their local library.

One of our favourite things about all these different reading options is that it makes reading so much more accessible!

Shoutout to The Storygraph for getting Gen to read everyday with their January pages challenge.

Read all about the surge in digital reading through libraries here and about Toronto's incredible 9 million digital checkouts, which puts them at the top worldwide.

Overdrive is the main app for borrowing ebooks from your library through the Kobo. You can also borrow audiobooks and magazines.

Hoopla is another app accessible through your local library and gives you access to movies, music, and so. many. comics and graphic novels.

Audible and Libro.fm are both excellent apps for listening to audiobooks. Audible is an Amazon company, while Libro.fm allows you to support a local bookstore of your choosing.

Not reading related, but if you're into films (as we are!), Kanopy is another library app that lets you watch a few movies each month for free and they have an extensive catalogue of recent films, classics, and foreign films.

  • 083 - A Lesson In Vengeance by Victoria Lee

In Episode 83, Gen and Jette dive into the world of dark academia with A Lesson in Vengeance by Victoria Lee. It's heavy with witchy vibes and spooky atmosphere. If you know us, then you know that's completely on brand. We had so much fun talking about all the twists in this one. Now we're wondering why we haven't been reading more dark academia.

    Show Notes:

If Gen had written her "Books Where the Setting is a Character" blog post after reading this book, it would have made the list. The setting is so good.
We're now on the hunt for more books in the dark academia category, so if you have any favourites, let us know. Drop them in the comments, Tweet us, DM us, or email us, we want them all.
There was another shout out to Paper Houses by Dominique Fortier. We'll never stop talking about that one.
Spoilers abound in this episode, which normally doesn't matter too much, but this book benefits from being read spoiler-free.

Next episode is a Holiday Wrap episode. Keep an eye on the blog for our year-end write ups as well. We'll be talking about our bests of the year and looking forward to a (hopefully) better 2022.

  • 081 - The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys by Gerard way, Shaun Simon, and Becky Cloonan

Look alive, Sunshine! It's time for another Book Club episode. Gen and Jette discuss The True Live of the Fabulous Killjoys: California by Gerard Way, Shaun Simon, and Becky Cloonan. It's a great conversation about storytelling, graphic novels, and dystopian aesthetics.

    Show notes:
Killjoys may have begun as an idea for a comic book series, but it first came to life on My Chemical Romance's album Danger Days. The graphic novel picks up where that story leaves off.
Watch the music videos for "Na Na Na" and "SING" for more Killjoys content and to see the where the aesthetic of the comic was born.
The sequel to Killjoys: California is available in a collected edition called The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys: National Anthem.
We came up with about five different essays we could write based on this book and had a great discussion about the use of colour.
Gerard Way was cofounder of the DC imprint Young Animal, but both Killjoys and Umbrella Academy were published by Dark Horse Comics.
For more graphic novel goodness, listen to Episode 21 where we discuss Shade, the Changing Girl by Cecil Castellucci.
Our next book club book is Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney. We'll be discussing this one in our first episode of 2022!

  • 080 - Book to Screen - Jurassic Park

In Episode 80, Gen and Jette take on another book to film comparison with one of our all time favourites—Jurassic Park! It was so much fun to discuss the book alongside the beloved film.

We talk about the tone differences between the book and the movie, which characters were more or less likeable, the incredible special effects in the film, John Williams' iconic score, and so much more!

    Show Notes:
Jette has a soft spot for Roberta the T-Rex.
We were impressed by how well the science holds up in both the book and the film, thirty years later. And those special effects? We've seen worse CGI in much more recent films.
Keep an eye out for more Book to Screen episodes. We've got The Martian on our radar.

    Other Books & Films Mentioned
