  • 026 - Paper Houses by Dominique Fortier

Coach House books sent Gen and Jette an advanced reading copy of Paper Houses by Dominique Fortier and they fell in love with it immediately. It cleverly intertwined the life of Emily Dickinson with that of the narrator, blending fact and fiction.

    Show Notes:

Obviously the song Jette was thinking about was “It’s Been a Summer” by New Found Glory #nfgforlife
Dickinson died of Bright’s disease but also heart failure? Medicine in 1886 may not have been that conclusive.
The book comes out on October 8, 2019
The French translation seems to mean Paper Towns but perhaps this was changed because of John Green’s Paper Towns novel? Also about the fictitious towns that map makers used to copyright their maps.
Emily’s sister-in-law was Susan and her friend was Sophia.
You can find Emily’s herbarium online at Harvard Library.
Fascicle is the word Jette couldn’t pronounce.

    Books:

Little Fires Everywhere by Celest Ng

Space Opera by Catherynne M Valente
Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid
    Read Chuck Klosterman
The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides

*Please note that we recorded in the bookstore cafe so the sound has its moments but the discussion is worth it! Plus sometimes it sounds like we're in a spaceship and that's cool

    Show Notes:
    Serial Podcast was mentioned, obvi.
Did anyone else catch the stars motif?
We cut a bunch of the discussion as to what exactly YA is because Episode 19 is all about this

    Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
And Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell
Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Lincoln and the Bardo y George Saunders

  • 021 - Shade, The Changing Girl by Cecil Castellucci
Gen and Jette talk about Shade, The Changing Girl - a collection of comics on DC's Young Animal imprint - about an alien that embodies a teenage girl and all the baggage that they both carry.
    Show Notes:
My Chemical Romance will always be amazing. Jette’s funeral will be a recreation of the “My Helena” video.
The Umbrella Academy is LIFE – Klaus forever!
Doom Patrol is another comic on YA that has been made into a tv show.
Cecil Castellucci was in Bite and Nerdy Girl before going solo.
Other stories by Cecil are “Boy Proof” and “We Have Always Lived on Mars” – soon to be a movie directed by John Krasinski.
Marley Zarcone is the artist behind these comics.
Gen and Jette may go on a tangent raging about the “live-action” remakes of the Disney animated films of their childhood. Their opinion is real.
Saga is a comic by Fiona Staples and Brian K. Vaughn on Image Comics.
Yes – Gen mentions Supernatural and Harry Potter again for anyone who’s counting.
Shade, the Changing Girl stems from Shade, the Changing Man and also continues in Shade, the Changing Woman.

About Another Book on the Shelf

From the publisher's feed

We started a book club but never actually talked about the books, so we started a podcast! And here we are almost a decade later.
