A drop in the unemployment rate to 9.6% has many cautiously optimistic that we are climbing out of the recession. Unfortunately in the African American community there is little to celebrate. The unemployment rate in the Black community nationwide is a whopping 16%, and is not much better in Virginia with 13% of African Americans unemployed. What does long term unemployment do to the individual, the family and the community at large? We'll talk about it with guests Herbert Townsend, Interim Chair, Department of Sociology at Hampton University; Dr. Janis Sanchez, Psychology Professor at Old Dominion University; and Berdell Wilson, Resource Room Coordinator, Opp Inc One-Stop Workforce Center. Plus, how one local high school uses music to keep young men positive and focused!

In the 2008-2009 school year, 557 students dropped out of Norfolk Public Schools - 447 of them African American. In Portsmouth, 327 students dropped out - 252 African American. In Virginia Beach that same year, 446 dropped out - 199 African American. Why are our children dropping out of school? And the better question, what are we doing to stop the trend? On the next Another View, we'll talk with Newport News Mayor McKinley Price and Police Chief Jim Fox about the people who call this section of the city home, and the plans for revitalization.
