If you are African American and 20 years old or older, you are twice as likely as your white counterpart to have diabetes. And if you live in Western Tidewater or Portsmouth, your chance of dying from the disease is double the state average! Add obesity to the mix and no matter the ethnicity or race, your chances of developing diabetes are soaring - according to the Centers for Disease Control, by 2050 a full one third of our population will have the disease. Scary statistics - but you can live with diabetes if you have it, and take steps to avoid it if you don't.

There's a new leader in the city of Portsmouth, Mayor Ken Wright. He's a Portsmouth native, husband, father, and business owner who believes in his city. A recent article in the Wall Street Journal says that historically black colleges and universities are irrelevant, and should be turned into community colleges or shut down. Great strides are being made in the fight against breast cancer, but it is still a disease that disproportionately affects African American women. On the next Another View, we'll talk with those who are on the front lines counseling women with breast cancer - and they know the issues first hand as they are survivors or have someone close to them with the disease. Code Switching - the ability to switch from informal to formal English depending on the circumstance. While code-switching can happen in any language, it becomes controversial when talking about the switch from African American Vernacular English to "professional" English. It's the subject of the WHRO-TV documentary Code Switching, which aired on Monday, Sept. 27. On the next Another View, we'll answer your questions about code switching, and discuss its implication within the African American culture. They are known as "food deserts" - neighborhoods with no or distant grocery stores. Nationally 23.5 million people, 6.5 million of them children, live in food deserts with little or no access to healthy foods like fresh fruits and vegetables. Food deserts exist in urban and rural areas, and affect African Americans disproportionately compared to other racial groups. Food deserts exist in Hampton Roads, and on the next Another View we'll talk about overcoming the challenges of obtaining healthy foods to eat when grocery stores are not accessible. Radio talk show host "Dr. Laura" used it recently on-air - and started the entire discussion all over again. Arguably the "N" word is the most controversial word in our society today. Why is it acceptable for some to use it, and others not? Should it be erased from our vocabulary for good? Roger Chesley, Columnist for the Virginian-Pilot; Community Activist Bill Thomas; Journalist, Author and Development Director for the Urban League, Wil LaVeist, and Carol Pretlow, Associate Professor of Political Science square off on the use of the "N" word.

Nationally, for every 1000 live births, almost 14 Black babies will die before their first birthday. That's compared to 5.76 White babies. In Virginia, the numbers mirror the national numbers, with Hampton Roads having the highest number of infant deaths. On this episode, we will examine this issue in the Black community of Hampton Roads.
