    Intro
Welcome to ApexThis.Podcast. A chronicle of my journey to start a publishing side business. This will be a behind the scenes look at what I’m doing to make that happen. I’ll share tips and best practices that I learn along the way. Tips that you can use to start your very own podcast and share your voice with the world.
    Coming up…news
    News
In the last episode in which I shared my news headlines, I listed the Podcast Consumer report by Edison Research. This report was from 2016.
During recording, I thought it seemed odd to have a 2016 report in 2017 but I justified it that it could have been a study conducted over a long period of time and they just compiled all the results.
    I was wrong.
Just last week, the 2017 report was released and I realized the error in my way.
This 2017 report shows that there has been a 5% increase in the awareness of the term “Podcasting” to 60% when compared against the 2016 report.
The report shows that podcasts are most listened to at home. This holds at 51%, followed by in a car at 22% and at work with 14%.
Podcast listeners are also very astute social media users. They are more likely to use social media and follow brands with the top brand usage being between Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest.
You can read all this and more at the link in the show notes.
    Coming up next…Tools
    Tools
I debated whether or not I should do an episode regarding tools, or the equipment I use for podcasting. For starters, it’s not advanced or interesting.
But what I can do is share what I have used for those that are just now getting started and give you a possible path that you can follow.
We will split this into two parts, first we will talk about hardware, and then software. First up, hardware.
    Hardware
When it comes to podcasting you have to ask yourself, what is your level of commitment. Or at least, that is what I had to ask myself when first getting started.
I knew I WANTED to get into podcasting but I didn’t want to spend a lot of money to get started. I mean, who wants to spend a few hundred dollars on something that they may not like?
With that in mind, I looked around and made my first investment. I bought a Blue Snowball microphone for $50. It is a USB microphone and had good reviews. My thought was that, if I didn’t like podcasting, then I was only out the $50.
Interestingly enough, the first projects I used the microphone on were two youtube videos for Google Play Music reviews.

Welcome back to another episode of ApexThis podcast. I’m your host Mark and I’m back with another quick episode about what’s been in the news and things you should keep your eye on in the world of podcasting. First up…
    Buttercast
Buttercast is an audio processing platform that aims to make the lives of podcasters easier. By uploading your podcast to the service it will perform editing tasks such as adjusting your volume. Future features include reducing silence and background noise. The service starts off free for up to 5 episodes for one podcast and jumps to $75 per month for an unlimited amount of podcasts and an unlimited number of episodes. Buttercast also has a podcast in its namesake as well as a blog that shares podcasting tips. I can see more automated software services such as this aiming to make podcasting easier for podcasters but also compete for businesses that perform these editing services for podcasters.
    StreamGuys
StreamGuys, a content delivery and streaming provider. has a new service, called SGrecast, that converts video and live streamed content into podcasts. This service allows generation of a podcast, or additional side content, within minutes along with creation of itunes compatible RSS feeds and a whole host of other services.
    Podcast Consumer 2016
Edison Research conducted a survey in early 2016 to explore Americans use of digital platforms and new media. In the research is a breakdown of how Americans consume podcasts. For example, 21% have listened to a podcast in the last month. That number drops to 13% for those that listened to a podcast in the last week. You can find all this and more in this episodes show notes on ApexThis.com.
    Podcast Networks
Former CEO of Fox International Channels, Hernan Lopez, leaving all of that behind and starting his very own podcast network, Wondery. With nearly 12 million monthly downloads, Hernan has reached 5 figure income from ad-revenue. Looking at the future of podcasts, Hernan stated in a Forbes interview, that he is really thrilled for Wondery to be a part of it.
    Apple Podcasts
Apple has rebranded their iTunes Podcasts to Apple Podcasts. This comes on the back of Eddy Cue, VP of Internet Software and Services, stating that Apple is working on new podcast features.
It will be interesting to see what Apple comes up. As we all know, podcast discovery and sharing is certainly in need of technological improvement.

    Why Publish An Income Report?
Publishing my quote-end-quote income report allows me to reflect back on the month to see what I did or didn’t do so well. Welcome to ApexThis.Podcast. In this episode, we talk about your podcast and show format. It’s taking your idea and adding structure to it, defining it. My hope is that after this episode, you will have a good idea on how to structure your show and maybe you’ll take a second listen of your favorite podcasts and see how they’re structured. Don’t worry, I’m learning along with you as I create a new podcast or rather, audiobook. I’m your host
I’m your host Mark, and coming up…The Format.
    INTRO MUSIC
Defining a podcast format will depend on the type of podcast show you will have.
Now, you and I have talked about the first thing you need to have in order to start a podcast. Spoilers for those that missed that episode, it was a passionate topic.
You have your idea, you have your topic, now you need to know the show format.
Will it be a single host? Or will you have a co-host or regular guests? This can have an impact in your shows presentation.
Will the show be an ad-hoc presentation, outlined, or scripted?
What is your release schedule like? Weekly, Bi-Weekly, Monthly, or seasonal?
That may have been a lot to throw at you, so let’s go through each starting with hosts.
    Hosts
This podcast is a single host podcast with directed instructional content. Do you have to identify yours at that level? Nope. I mention that as you can be a single host podcast that is focused on interviews, answering questions, or whatever. This can span to co-host formats as well.
You don’t have to follow a specific host format, mix it up. Your most important task is to simply provide great content. Make something that you would listen to. Whether that is solo, or with others.
The next setup is how the show will be done. First up Ad-Hoc.
    Ad-Hoc
This is what it is. Nothing written, or prepared, you just talk. This can be tricky, as you are providing no direction or flow to your content. You are simply ad-libbing. This may make it difficult for listeners to follow along with you. But it can also make it interesting and keep your show unpredictable. If you move from a solo host format to dual or multiple hosts, then ad-hoc would benefit best for conversational type of podcasts such as those that talk about popular culture or movies.
With that said, you can combine this with the next method, outlining.
This is what I did for my first podcast. Despite writing a standalone blog post from the results of my research, I created an outline of the topics I wanted to discuss. I also added other segments into the show such as news and spots for ad placement so that I would know when and where in my outline they should occur for the show.
This provided structure to the show. I was able to simply speak into the microphone and hit each topic with no issue. I was able to create a conversational tone but get back on base when needed. To give an example, you could look at this episode. As an outline, I started with an intro, next are my talking points: hosts, outline, length and schedule followed by a wrap-up and outro. That takes us to the next option which is scripted.
    Scripting
This is something I am experimenting with now. Even with this podcast series and the relaunch of my first podc...

Welcome to ApexThis.Podcast. A podcast about…podcasts; or rather a chronicle of my journey to start a publishing side business. This will be a behind the scenes look at what I’m doing to make that happen. And what better way than to start with my next project, creating an audiobook. But to get started, there is something critical that you need…The Idea To Podcast.
    The Idea To Podcast
Day in and day out, I listened to podcast after podcast. Never did I imagine I would want to start a podcast myself, let alone actually create one.

Maybe you’re in the same boat as I was? You’re excited at the possibility of broadcasting your voice to the world. But an unknown fear creeps up within turning your call to action, into inaction. You wonder, can I really do this?

    Yes, you can.

You’ve already covered step 1, a passion and excitement to podcast. If you’re not excited about it, then you won’t give it your all. That passion is what is going to push you through the rough times and lonely times.

So you have to ask yourself, am I passionate about this? Is this something I will love doing?
Was that a yes? Ok, so let’s flip to the other side of the passion coin and talk about the other requirement to complete step 1. The idea to podcast.
Don’t get me wrong, you do need a passion to podcast, but that won’t be your only number 1 requirement.  Your true passion is the reason you want to create the podcast to begin with. And it is the reason that you will keep going.

    Your Passionate Idea
How do you know that you are passionate about your podcast topic?

One way to know is to ask yourself, “Has anyone ever asked you a question about a topic and you found yourself still talking about it an hour later?”

We’ve all been there. We’ve all told our victims that “I could talk about this all day.”

If this is bringing back memories or ideas immediately jumped out to you, then yeah, that may be something you are passionate about.
Before I decided to start my first podcast, I was the leader of a local user group and an administrator of various applications.  I found that while there was a lot of material to read and learn about these apps, there weren’t any tips and best practices readily available. The user group was the best place to get that information. I wondered, what if others wanted this information and to learn on the go like I did?
So, I did some research and found that when these tools were talked about on other podcasts, listeners liked it. And since I loved chatting about all the tips, tricks, and best practices I learned, I figured, why not podcast about it.

Your story could be as simple as that. An idea or topic that you are passionate talking about.

    Would You Listen?

I wish that I could leave it at just the idea but there is one more thing. I hinted at this in my reasoning to start my first podcast.
Not only did I have a topic that I enjoyed talking about, it was something I would actually listen to.

With your idea and topic in hand, ask yourself, would you listen to a podcast about your topic? Would you listen to your podcast?

If that was a truthful yes, then you are already two steps ahead of everyone else.
You’re passionate about your idea, and you would actually listen to your podcast. Will others?
    Now, you need to research.
    Research
Are others looking for a podcast about your chosen topic? Don’t know where to look, how about a forum, user group,

As above in the screenshot from Toggle, all of my time for the month was to write, record, and edit four podcast episodes. I categorize the work as Blog, Business or Podcast. Podcast encapsulates everything needed for that episode and business is the other aspects such as email, site upkeep, writing this blog post.

Coming up in this episode, The Future of Podcasting.

In my journey to start a publishing company, there is a lot I must learn and in learning, there is a lot that I must read. And so, I figured that I would share this as well. Interesting things that I find to be cool, engaging, and helpful. News from the podcasting world, if you are so inclined.
First up, a discussion about podcast discoverability on Download This Show.
    How do you find podcasts?
One thing that stood out to me in their discussion was search and how searching for a keyword in most podcast directories retrieves shows with that keyword in the show title.
    (download this show clip).
Despite technological limitations, this made me think about how I have tried to make my podcast discoverable? How have others tried to make their podcast discoverable? You have social media that you disperse your podcast to and you have forums and blogs.
Why provide transcripts and show notes?
Releasing to social media is…easy. You manage the timing to post and you tag your show to allow others to pull it up in their search results. You can even interest more people with a behind-the-scenes look at what you’re doing. That could pull in people to start following your social accounts and eventually, you can make a listener out of them. But it’s all about being social and interacting with those that follow you, those that are discussing the same topic and those that do the same as you.
What about show notes and transcripts? A readily available body of text for the web.
Finding podcasts are incredibly difficult. For starters, not a lot of podcast directories such as iTunes, allow you to search beyond the show name and or title. But just beneath that surface is a treasure trove of data. Your show notes and or your show transcript IF you have them. There are many benefits to having show notes and especially a transcript but the primary reason here is to be found. Think about it, when looking for podcasts, you go to iTunes and search for a podcast…are you searching for text? Or are you scrolling through the new & noteworthy lists or the multitude of subcategories to find that business related podcast?
Even though technology can only give use the popular podcasts for each category, we are still missing out on so much more. So we turn to google,

    Intro
Welcome to ApexThis podcast. A podcast about…podcasting. Or rather, a chronicle of my journey to start a publishing side business. So, what is that? How does one get started?
    Why Publishing
While the act of podcasting for me is young, I’ve always seen myself as a publisher and toyed with self-publishing. When I was younger I aimed at being a songwriter at the head of my own company. Every song I wrote not only included a “written by” notation but also included my to-be company name “Mastermind Entertainment”.
Suffice to say, I never formed such a company, but I always represented myself in that manner when it came to writing songs and shopping around for a singer to perform them. Being so adamant to retaining my publisher’s fee, I backed away from any agreements that broached that territory. And let me tell you, there were many that wanted to scam you of every right you had or trick you into selling your songs outright.
And so the dream continued. Songs that I wrote were labeled with my to-be publishing company name. Short stories were no different.
    So, what changed? Why now?
Sometimes we convince ourselves that things weren’t meant to be. We let an unknown guardian block our path and in doing so, we sometimes get lost. But if it was truly meant to be, it would be. You will see the signs sprinkled about you and if you stop long enough, you’ll see that what you were meant to do, never left. For myself, it has been writing and speaking. And over the years, I have used both to give speeches, presentations, and talks.  My songwriting ceased for a period of time and I took up technical and copy writing. Neither were ever done as a primary function but I found that I was so at ease with writing and speaking and that I truly enjoyed it.  Others noticed this too.
And so I thought, maybe I’m not half bad at this. Maybe I should focus on these two areas, improve my writing, and learn the art of storytelling.
I went back to writing; stretching my ability to its max and learning all that I can. This meant I started reading more, exposing myself to different writing styles and breaking down the author’s themes and plots. Then I joined Toastmasters, a public speaking organization. With its workbook, I figured I could improve my writing with targeted goals and then improve my speaking with the delivery of my writing and enhance my ability to tell a story.
This renewed passion has brought me back to my younger days, where I would sign all my writing with the name of my to-be publishing company name. But this time, that company will be real and that company will be an independent publisher.
But first, I need to take baby steps. I have to build a name.
    About Publishing
Publishing is an interesting business. It is not uncommon for a writer to start a publishing company. For starters, writing is your work, so you should treat it like a business. Establishing a publishing company helps separate your personal finances from that of your business or rather, your writing. It also helps elevate you to being seen as a professional and adds weight to your publishing.
Beyond that, you retain publishers right! In music, for example, you write the song, you have the copyright. When you join a publisher, they become co-owner of the copyright. If you are your own publisher you retain that publisher’s right...

    Intro
Are there any podcast user groups in Austin?
Hmm, let’s take a look. Nothing on Facebook or Meetup. Wait, what’s this? Oh, 2015. Why aren’t there any active user groups? What’s the deal?
Maybe I should start one. Yeah, I’ll start a podcast user group.
Welcome to ApexThis.Podcast. A podcast about…podcasting; or rather a chronicle of my journey to start a publishing media podcasting side business? This will be a behind the scenes look at what I’m doing to make that happen. I’ll share tips and best practices that I learned along the way. These tips and best practices will be something that you can use to start your very own podcast and share your voice with the world.
My name is Mark and this is episode 3 “The Meetup”.
    The Meetup
4 years ago I started using a set of applications that were extensible with a marketplace for plugins, easy to use and were customizable. No one at my place of work knew how to use these applications or the best methods to set them up, so Google became my best friend.
I would spend hours devouring any information I could. Tips, tricks, best practices, you name it. Some answers to my questions were good, yet others couldn’t be answered. We then wondered, “is there anyone nearby that I could ask?”
I went back to Google, like Aladdin to the Genie and I asked for it to find me a user group. They say becareful for what you ask for as I did not find a user group, instead, I found a page asking if I wanted to start one.
