Apologue Podcast

Greg Bolton is a father, an audio systems tech and general all-round sweetheart. Greg is a returning guest to the show and greg always delivers a great conversation. This time, we dove a little into his band he had with Tyler Wilkinson called "Motion Picture Ending"and what his experience was. This podcast's common thread is that when bands get together as young people, life changes as well as priorities. It's very hard to explain how bands work and why people play music for no love and no money. Relationships break up, hearts are broken. Rare victories win over decisions to quit and to keep on keepin' on. After the fun is gone, it's time to grow up and contribute into society in other ways.

This episode was special because the flow of the conversation is exactly what I envisioned as a 'format' to this podcast. Lately, I've been putting out some episodes that I'm not super proud of. It's not the content or even the guest. The show has taken on a new feel that comes with the fact that I have pretty much interviewed everyone I know.. twice. I'm meeting some guests for the first time. as with all first impressions, some guests embrace the idea of a no-questions-conversation-based-podcast. Some hate it and come off as uncomfortable which is maybe who that person actually is. I appreciate all that listen and follow the show. I'll keep doing them if you keep listening! Thanks for reading this long winded intro, enjoy the show

Miguel Chen is the bass player for Teenage Bottlerocket. TBR is on Fat Wreck Chords and is in the middle of a world tour. they've already played South America, South Africa and South Florida (citation needed). Miguel also owns and operates a Yoga studio with his wife. He's managed to blend punk rock with a healthy life balance that's very unique in this business. TBR is coming to Canada this week and will play Montebello's Rockfest. Anyone that knows this show knows that I adore Rockfest and it's organizers. It's one of the best festivals we have and Teenage Bottlerocket are one of the many awesome bands on the bill!

BTW, I don't know who I should credit for the photo. please let me know!

Brian Doherty was the lead guitar player and co-founder of "Big Wreck". A band that was founded in a dorm room at Berklee college of music in the early nineties. Brian was a kind and humble man with some pretty great stories to share. I want to thank Colton Taylor that hooked up this talk with Brian. Condolences to family, loved ones and fans.

He will be missedRIP

Andre Alves plays guitar and sings in Sao Paulo Brazils "Statues on Fire". Statues on Fire were just about to go on tour in Germany before when we spoke about a week ago. Statues on Fire is a style of melodic hardcore similar to bands like Strung Out and Belvedere with a welcoming 90's sound. Brazil is having similar if not worse political problems like our American brothers and sisters. This always breeds great punk rock!

Lee Rose is the lead singer and principal song writer for Toronto's "Ace of Wands". Great Lyrics and and song writing makes this band. They are true to their sound and ethic in todays fickle musical landscape. Their debut LP is titled "Lioness" and it was recorded a few songs at a time until there was a record. ace of wands is a trio that has Anna Mernieks on Guitar/Vocals and Jody Brumell on drums. AOW approached this album different than conventional albums by starting with voice and guitar. the drums and instruments came later when the feeling of the song was set. I encourage you all to go get their music!

Spencer B is the vocalist for Santa Cruz's 'Give you Nothing'. Formed from a few different hardcore bands in the local area, 'Give you Nothing' is reminiscent of the early/mid 90's skate punk and it's amazingly played and recorded. Their album is out on snubbed records and was released on May 1 2019. Spencer has been known to promote a few shows in he day. Turns out we were in the same room a few times about 20 years ago a few times in Santa Cruz.

Ryan comes to us from sunny Edmonton AB to talk about a few things like promote their mini Ontario and Quebec tour. He also came on to talk about the live stream that Old Wives will be playing here at my house. there will be a chance to pay what you can with a digital tip jar. Anything small and large will be excepted. Ryan and I talked about playing in a band and the need to keep at it and not just break up after the first sign of failure. Not that Old Wives failed at anything. If you don't sell a million albums on the first album, the band doesn't need to break up.Check the Live stream out on May 14th: http://apologue.ca/live-stream/

Jeremy Dove and I go back to the early 90's. Jeremy and I first met when he joined a band I knew called 'Yet Another Posse'. A rap metal band that had a ton of potential. So much that the major labels came calling. As many bands fates go, YAP had a go at the business and they were about 1 year ahead of their time when bands like limp bizkit had yet to be discovered. A story too common. A wonderful catch up with an old and dear friend.
