  • Horse of a different color.

This interview is with an awesome Appalachian from Prestonsburg, Kentucky by the name of James Stiltner.

In Eastern Kentucky, lots of folks have trail horses, show horses, and the occasional draft horse or mule however, James is a professional driver/trainer in harness racing!

The Red Mile is a harness track in Lexington, but there is now a track in Corbin, Kentucky, making it easier for South East Ky, Tennessee, and Virginia to enjoy a day at the track and offer another attraction to our part of the world.

James was raised in a good home, he was a well behaved child, but always had a need for speed. When he was 12 years old he competed against grown men in speed classes at the World horse shows, rode motocross, and now drives Standard bred horses in the harness races. There is a lot you can learn about harness racing in this episode and you will also hear several cool things Mr. Stiltner has got to experience.

  • Back to School

As Summer rapidly comes to a close, and dread sets in for kids returning to class. Bus drivers have to do their yearly update and refresh all the safety guidelines in their minds, to ensure they are being safe when transporting children.

In this episode Jason, and Papaw Paul, have a fellow bus driver, Richard Lakes, and Transportation Director, Kathy Spurlock in to talk a little about bus driving and dangers on the road. The bus driver's number one concern is always the safety of the children.

To non-bus drivers, we ask that you please always be aware, and don't be distracted by cell phones and other devices while driving. Drivers keep a pretty tight schedule so if you live on a one lane road, try to schedule your leave and return times to avoid the bus.

We thank God for all the fine folks in the education system that look out for our children, while they are in school and on the buses!

We thank all who take the time to listen and share the good news of Appalachia with your friends and neighbors!

  • Sheriff Morris was slain in the line of duty 1934.
I found no one who could tell me anything about Sheriff Morris's killers in the county where it happened. There is a memorial that sits to the right in front of the courthouse in McKee Kentucky. I have worked a lot of days beside the building as a food vendor and I've walked by the monument countless times. After seeing it several times I had the question "Who killed him?" I asked elected officials, older residents, and fellow historians and no one could tell me anything. So I took it upon myself to get on the hunt and see how much info I could find.
Thank you Kelly Killian for sending me the article from the Courier Journal!!! I included a couch recording of an original song written by my wife and myself for The Acoustic Guitar Project. It is titled Sage Grass Serenade. Email us at [email protected] Included is the link to the Officer Down Memorial Page https://www.facebook.com/officerdown be sure to check them out. Thank you again Kelly Killion!

  • Papaw Paul and Tina Hammonds. Save The Children
Save The Children is a wonderful program that helps kids to learn to read and retain what they read better.
This interview is somewhat different from our regular format, as Papaw Paul sits down and has a conversation with his boss,Tina, from Save The Children about the work they do. Some kids struggle a little more than others and it is quite alright to get a little extra help.
They tell stories of helping kids and the progress that is made. A couple things they have studied are The Titanic, and Code talkers.
As you will hear in this episode they both love the kids and want to help them all grow to be better people.
I'm gonna say they are "2 Awesome Appalachians, giving a leg up on reading, to little Appalachians!"
Save The Children was founded on April 15th, 1919 (104 years ago) by Eglantyne Jebb and Dorothy Buxton in London England.
The organization helps to raise money to improve children's lives by creating better educational opportunities, better health care, and improved economic opportunities. [Wikipedia]

  • The Jackson County Cancer Fund
It was a heartwarming experience to see all the fine folks come together June 10th at the Festival of Hope, to contribute to The Jackson County Cancer Fund. There were inflatables, a dunking booth, cake walk, great food, live music, guest speakers, silent auction, and so much more. Mickey,Minnie, and Goofy were in attendance for some cool photo ops. (Pictures will be posted on appalachianimagination.com)
The children all had a good time playing, while the adults ate their bellies full, conversed with one another, and listened to the beautiful music being made. A few folks shared their stories with us and told us a few of the many good things the JCCF has done for people in the community. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100075985271518&mibextid=LQQJ4d The Jackson County Cancer Fund P.O.
