Richard Morris Hunt was one of the very first Americans to establish architecture as an art form and his work included such iconic structures as the base of the Statue of Liberty and the grand facade and entrance hall of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as mansions for Mrs. Astor and the Vanderbilts.
