  • 012: Ramune Bartuskaite: Encouraging Architects to Specify Better Materials

On today’s episode of Architectette we welcome Ramune Bartuskaite. Ramune is an Architect and Associate at FIFTEEN Architecture and Design as well as the CEO and founder of Spec Matters - an organization that strives to encourage the building industry to write healthier specifications and make better material selections. (If FIFTEEN sounds familiar, that’s because we interviewed the three female founders of the firm back in May! If you’re interested, check out Episode 009.)

    We talk about:

    - Ramune's first generation college experience and her contributions to Rise First which empowers first gen students

    - Volunteering within architecture and how/why she helped establish PennDesign Women in Architecture

    - We do a deep dive into Spec Matters and talk about building materials to avoid, which to use more frequently, and how architects and designers can leverage available tools to make healthier, safer spaces for their clients

On today's episode of Architectette we feature Dr. Tami Hausman. Tami is the founder and president of Hausman LLC which is an agency that helps architecture and design professionals amplify their influence inside and outside of AEC industries. In addition to her role as president, she is a media specialist, expert communicator, art historian, and design aficionado. Her international roster of clients includes architects, engineers, construction firms, expeditors, interiors firms, real estate developers, project management firms, construction cost consultants, artists, and non-profit organizations.

    We talk about:

    - Transitioning from Semiotics-French to marketing for architecture firms

    - Establishing her firm, winning her first clients, and learning how to run a business

    - A special segment called 'Doctor in the Haus' where Tami advises on common AEC public relation questions including:

    a. How do I network?

    b. Does my firm really need to invest in PR?

    c. How do I reach my target audience? What message do I share?

    d. Do awards matter?

    e. What publications have the most impact?

    f. How to avoid being left out of marketing efforts by collaborators?

    g. What is too much content?

    h. Why does a firm need a marketing strategy?

    - We end by talking about rising trends in the AEC industry and what Tami wishes AEC firms knew about communications and marketing

    We talk about:

    - How Evelyn was inspired to study architecture and balanced it- from the start- with other commitments that were important to her, like playing collegiate soccer.

    - We next review qualifications and expectations for achieving FAIA recognition.

    - Evelyn shares about her experience as the first employee at her firm to have a baby and how she negotiated a maternity and return to work plan with her employer.

    - Next, we chat about the Practice of Architecture and how Evelyn leverages her MBA and MPA to work with business owners to make their operations more efficient.

    - We then talk about what architecture firms can learn from Slack’s stance on in-person and remote work strategies.

    - Evelyn then elaborates on small changes that make a big impact on worker engagement like core hours, personal operating manuals, and dial-in policies.

    - We end with a few ways Evelyn continues to learn and evolve and where you can follow her efforts (see the show notes!).

  • 005: Eva Baker: An Architect Specializing in Laboratory Planning

On today's podcast we welcome guest Eva Baker AIA, LEED AP BD+C. Eva is an architect who specializes in laboratory planning. She is currently a Senior Associate and Director of the Philadelphia Office of HERA Laboratory Planners.

    We talk about:

    - Eva's pairing of a Bachelor degree in Chemistry with a Master's degree in Architecture so that she could combine two of her passions.

    - Whether she followed the advice of her mentors to focus on general architecture before diving into laboratory expertise.

    - I ask Eva what are the important components to consider when designing a lab including structural modules, safety, flexibility, MEP, and equipment and then we also talk about emerging trends in laboratory design like the integration of automation.

    - We discuss her long path to working at HERA and how consultancy functions differently than an architecture firm.

    - We talk about her favorite types of projects, skills she looks for when hiring, and how long it takes (spoiler- two years!) to become a lab specialist.

    - Eva also shares about the challenges she faced when she returned from maternity leave, had to balance office work and pumping, late nights working "parent hours", the constraints of childcare, and the societal and self-imposed stress of motherhood and career progression.

    - We end by talking about the importance of sharing responsibilities at home so that she and her partner can pursue meaningful careers as well as a successful family life.

  • 003: Cynthia Kracauer: Speaking Up, Leading, and Connecting in Architecture

On today’s Architectette podcast we welcome Cynthia Kracauer. Cynthia is the Executive Director of the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation. She is also an architect and has had a fascinating career working for a starchitect, leading architecture firms as a partner, and serving as the managing director of AIA NY. She is at the forefront of advocacy for women in architecture.

Please note a potential #triggerwarning. During the podcast, we discuss themes of sexual harassment.

    We talk about:

    - How childhood crafting led Cynthia to architecture school.

    - The challenges and cultural nuances of being a member of one of the first co-ed classes at Princeton.

    - How an early career experience led Cynthia to do what she does today: advocating for women in architecture.

    - The most surprising part of having a baby and how it altered her career trajectory.

    - When being a principal wasn’t what she thought it would be, especially after losing a large portion of her FDNY clients on 9/11.

    - Transitioning to working for AIA NY and later, the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation.

    - Cynthia's tips for how to succeed as an architect
