A work meeting between Dr. Guldal and Sam (Are You Awake? team member), turns into much more. In Part 1 of this very candid episode, the two dive into the complex issue of identifying current feelings based around past trauma. Sam struggles to embrace the qualifying titles: “victim” vs. “survivor”; while Dr. Guldal facilitates the uncovering of Sam’s subconscious, to root out the underlying issues that are preventing her from healing.

The phrase “gut-feeling” became popular in the 1970’s, but its heritage is quite ancient. The way we now refer to the “heart” as the place where emotions reside, was originally believed (by the Greeks and many others) to have existed in the human gut, and really, that makes more sense.
We hear “follow your gut”, “gut-reaction” and “gut-feeling” because our gut is actually our second brain. Typically, it is telling us how we are feeling before the thought has even formulated in our minds. It’s the place where emotions manifest physically AND where your diet is digested for nutrients and distributed to the body. If you think about it, your gut is quite busy and important; so you better learn how to take care of it.

It’s morning. You know its morning because you were just blasted awake by your alarm. Fumbling to press the snooze button, you feel your heart beating out of your chest. There is roughly 5 minutes for you to tell yourself you are too tired to get up, that you don’t want to do this, and scroll through your mental Rolodex to find a plausible and believable excuse to stay in bed. Then the dreaded snooze alarm charges you again. Sound familiar?
So many of us feel this on a daily basis, or experience it often enough to be able to write a book on the sensation. We are haunted, and it is daunting. BUT here’s a thought…add two more thoughts when you wake! That may sound counter-intuitive. It may even seem crazy, but listen to find out why it’s exactly what the doctor prescribes.

Mark the Dog Guy (Mark Imhof) joins Dr. Guldal this week for a very special interview! Mark Imhof is a business consultant turned dog groomer who has changed the course of his own life, and in the process has changed the lives of many others. You might have seen his story sprawling across the internet, and for good reason: it is inspiring!
All of us battle with the pressures of what we “should be doing” or who we “should be”, and that can muffle the voice in our soul that is telling us, “this is who you are”. Mark and Dr. Guldal discuss why stories like his catch on like wildfire, how he knew he was making the right choice, and his hands-on method of compassion generates hope, joy and “forever homes”. Listen to a real life story of someone who embraced their soul’s calling, and then…listen to your soul.

Let’s look at some of the events that we anticipate with joy: movie night, Super Bowl Sunday, the holidays with family, a romantic date, an evening with friends, or brunch (who doesn’t love brunch?). What do all of these things have in common? Food. Sweet-sweet food. It is typical of all cultures to come together and share deep bonding moments and rituals over the act of breaking bread.
So if neurons that fire together – wire together, it is no surprise that certain foods, the moment we even think of them, evoke a strong sense of comfort and happiness. But what happens when comfort becomes control?

Now that we have learned what shame and blame are comprised of, how they manifest, and what they look like, we are left with one question, “What now?”
Sometimes we are trapped in the environment that breeds these feelings, and it can appear daunting to overcome; maybe even impossible. It is in these moments that entering an awakened state is imperative. We may not have control of our circumstances, but we are always in control of our thoughts. In Part 3 of this series, Dr. Guldal advises us on how to prevail if we are suffering from one or both of these.

In this week’s continuation of “Shame In. Blame Out.”, we have a special surprise! Serendipitously, one of Dr. Guldal’s former clients makes a surprise visit right as recording was about to start. Billie was one of Dr. Guldal’s earliest patients, and was suffering from the roughest case of shame that Dr. Guldal had witnessed up to that point.
Listen to hear a true and personal story about what it is like to live with shame. Hear some of the not so obvious ways shame enters a person’s psyche, and the ways in which therapy can transform a life and impact future generations. This is a truly beautiful episode you don’t want to miss.

Have you been told many times, “Stop saying ‘sorry’. You say it too much.”? While walking, are you a person who looks down to their feet and the ground? Do you have poor posture? If you are answering “yes” to these, you may be showing symptoms of shame.
We are learning through this show that ALL parts of us are connected. If we experience something in the mind, it will manifest itself in our bodies, our spirit, and our actions. Shame, of course, is not exempt, and sometimes our shame contorts itself to actions of blame.
Dr. Guldal goes in-depth on why we experience shame and blame, and how these two show themselves. “Shame In. Blame Out.” will be a multiple episode series; so please tune in next week for Part 2.

The knowledge one gains through personal life experience is deeply ingrained into subconscious, and is often the guiding force for behavior, self-talk, and the company one chooses to keep.
This experiential knowledge can dictate who we are attracted to and who we attract. Our relationships are vital to our lives, but if we don’t take a step back to reflect, we might be unwittingly repeating unresolved relationships of the past. We deserve to have companionship that empowers us and tends to us with love. So ask yourself, who are you hanging out with?
