This is a short reflection on an insightful passage from Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics book 9 chapter 1, in which Aristotle discusses the sorts of tensions that arise within friendships and other relationships, having to do with what one party gives, promises, or provides to the other. Aristotle notes that giving someone something they don't want, in place of what they do desire, is often worse than not giving them anything at all.
