This lecture discusses key ideas from the ancient philosopher Aristotle's work of moral theory, the Nicomachean Ethics.

Specifically it focuses on his discussion in book 8 about how friendship and affection function within the context of relationships in the family, the household, and in marriage

Common examples are when one person is getting pleasure out of the relationship, but the other is getting some merely useful good - or when one person is friends with the other on account of the virtuous character of the other, but can only provide a useful good or pleasure to the other person. These are important types of friendship, and Aristotle discusses what is required to provide a kind equalization or proportionality to them.
