James McKissic shares the legacy of his great great-great-grandfather, Wilson Woods, who was born into slavery in Meigs County, Tennessee during the 1820's. Wilson's mother was a slave named Mary, his father was also his owner. When Mr. Mckissic's mother shared his ancestor's 1862 bill of sale (between his two white half brothers), with James, he shared it with the National Museum of African American History which began a whole sequence of activities including a Washington Post article and being featured on the Historically Black podcast. Wilson's legacy includes the family farm which is still in the family today.

In this episode of Armchair Historians, Anne Marie talks to Impressions of America podcast co-host, Simon Heptinstall. You may remember a couple weeks back we talked to another of the Impressions of America co-host, Vaughn Joy, about how American culture is reflected in Christmas films during the Cold War period. If you haven’t done so already, I strongly recommend that episode.
Impressions of America is a podcast which looks at the wider subjects of culture, politics, and media that formed American life in the latter 20th century.
Today, specifically, Simon focuses on the representation, reflection and deconstruction of America during the second half of the 20th century through film and television. He shows us how, nestled within the TV shows and films of that time period, are reflections of the social, cultural and political events that shaped US history.

In this episode, Anne Marie chats with UK electro swing performer Madam Misfit. Her musical style combines elements of electro swing (also known as vintage remix), and chap hop. The inspiration behind her music comes from childhood influences of television and too much panda pop, with lyrics tumbling out of her imagination onto paper entertaining audiences with her delightful and witty humour.
Madam Misfit shares her love of WWII music history, a history which hails back to her almost two decades career as a musician in the Royal Air Force.

In this 2021 Inauguration special Anne Marie talks to Dr. Teri Finneman about Victoria Woodhull, first woman to run for the office of President of the United States in 1872. Dr. Finneman reaches to the shadows of history to raise this erased-from-history woman and event into the light once again. On the eve of Inauguration Day we talk about the momentousness of the American people voting the first female Vice President into office 149 years after Victoria Woodhull ran for president.
Dr. Teri Finneman is a journalism professor at the University of Kansas and a former political reporter. She is executive producer of the Journalism History podcast and author of Press Portrayals of Women Politicians, 1870s-2000s. Her research focuses on how women in politics are portrayed in media with an emphasis on women politicians, first ladies and the history of the suffrage movement.
