Around Ocean County continues with Joan Acevedo of the American Heart Association.  Joan discusses the difference in heart attack symptoms between men and women, and how to prevent a stroke. Welcome to another weekend edition of Around Ocean County with Lisa Anderson.  Today’s guest is Theresa Segul, director of Ocean of Love non profit charitable organization in Toms River.  Ocean of Love assists and supports children in Ocean County who are dealing with a cancer diagnosis and their families. The organization began 31 years ago with twelve families and has grown tremendously. Ocean of Love provides food, help with utilities, gas cards, gift cards, holiday gifts and support groups such as sibling, parental and teen support and counseling.

Around Ocean County with Lisa Anderson continues with Theresa Segul of Ocean of Love in Toms River.  Located on Route 37 east and Maple Avenue, this "little blue house" is a family of volunteers, all volunteer board and staff that continues to assist in many ways during and in the years following treatment. This week, Lisa’s speaking to Michael Dominick, director of communications for the non-profit organization Make A Wish NJ Chapter.  Make A Wish began in 1980 in Phoenix, Arizona.   New Jersey saw its own chapter in 1983 and there are now over 60 chapter across the nation. At Make A Wish, their mission is to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses. Over 560 wishes were granted in 2018. Make A Wish also granted a historic 10,000th wish in May of 2018, celebrating their 35th anniversary!

It’s Around Ocean County with Lisa Anderson: a weekly show focusing on public affairs that matter to you.   This week features two guests, co founder Deidre Spiropoulos and grant writer Rowena Crawford Phillips from the non-profit organization Impact 100 Jersey Coast.  This "women only" organization awards six figure grants to three area non profits who have been selected and voted on by the committee after completing a rigorous application process throughout the year.   Impact Jersey Coast serves Monmouth and Ocean Counties. The original Impact 100 began in Cincinnati in 2001, and has grown to over fifty-five chapters across the country. Each woman who wants to join Impact must donate 1,100 per year in order to sustain the grants.  Members are also encouraged to use their expertise in the field they have experience in, such as public Speaking, finance, etc.

This week, Around Ocean County's Lisa Anderson discusses with volunteer Gwen Moran  the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Giving, which takes place Monday January 21st at Wall Intermediate School. From 9 a.m. until noon, students, faculty and parents join forces for a day of giving.  Clothing, diapers, pet supplies, etc. are collected and distributed throughout the community by volunteers. The students also bake treats and baked goods for area First Responders and deliver them to the various stations as a way of thanking them for their service throughout the year.  Gently worn clothing, prom dresses and suits are delivered to various charities throughout Monmouth and Ocean Counties and go directly to those in need. Some of the charities helped are Lunch Break in Red Bank, Wag On In pet shelter, and the Manasquan food pantry.
