David's bio: 

David is a sculptor in stone. His work is in private collections locally, across the UK and in Europe and the US. He exhibits twice a year through Oxfordshire Artweeks (and is a member of the organisation's board) and through various other exhibitions. In the Summer and Autumn he runs Sculpture-in-a-Day courses based in the grounds of Cokethorpe School in Witney or 'on tour' at clients' own homes. Recently David started turning wood, which has the great advantage of being done in the relative warmth of his garage rather than at his outdoor studio at Cokethorpe. David was previously a teacher, mostly of chemistry and photography to A Level.

David's work, for home or for garden, is influenced by the shapes, patterns and movement of the natural world. His favourite stone is Ancaster hard white or weatherbed limestone but he also uses slate, Bath stone, Cotswold stone, Yorkshire gritstone, granite, soapstones, serpentine and more. He sometimes uses gold leaf in his pieces.

In this epsiode of Art Musings, Carole and Sally chat with multidisciplinary artists Kay Gibbons. The focus is art as healing. Can art actually shine a light when we are down and out?

About Kay Gibbons:

Kay is a multidisciplinary artist living and working from her studios in South Oxfordshire, UK. She paints, draws sculpts and creates stained glass panels and windows to commission for peoples homes, places of work, public buildings, hospitals - wherever. Kay also runs workshops for local charities and from her studios.

Kay writes:

"Many opportunities have arisen because people say 'ask Kay, Kay does art...' In this way I unintentionally became a glass artist. Life was such that I had metaphorically fallen through a broken window surrounded by darkness and shards of glass. Through being invited to make a stained glass window for the hospital ward, with trepidation and courage I was able to design and make the hospital window and in doing so mend ' my broken pains / panes, creating a new and beautiful window of my own life."

"I'm a collage artist from Oxford. All my work is hand-cut - no digital - as I enjoy the process of searching through books and magazines for source images, then cutting process of searching through books and magazines for source images, then cutting and gluing by hand. So, all the pieces I sell are one-offs.

"I've come to collage relatively recently; I started nearly 3 years ago. I used to paint and draw obsessively when I was younger, but with A levels, then university, I fell out of the habit. It's lovely to have something arty back in my life! I have a degree in French, German, and Spanish, and a masters in history of art and design. For a living, I teach art history and also zumba aerobics."

I enjoy the bold look of single-colour linocuts, but also the challenge and effect of multi-colour, multi-block prints, even if I end up with a fresh batch of grey hairs with each one I tackle.

"I’m an artist/painter/printmaker/sculptor working in Oxford. Initially trained in three dimensional design, I have worked within graphic & software design/illustration, then moved into exterior & landscape design over the last decade. In 2022 I completed a Masters in Fine Art at Oxford Brookes, which has had a significant impact on my work. I am a carpenter/project manager for a garden studio business but more recently I balance my work as an artist with art technician/art handling work for galleries and museums.

“My work has come about whilst considering our changing relationship with the environment and those we share it with. Strong ties to a place that I feel somehow removed from, detached from the culture, knowledge and experiences of previous generations. A ‘home’ I cannot settle in. Industrial landscapes reframed as beauty spots & holiday resorts, less for the indigenous, more for those visiting. I am trying to process the changes to this way of life, displaced by globalisation and free trade, and the impact that has on an identity of a people and their sense of belonging. Old skills and habits no longer passed on first hand, folklore attaining mythical status as we struggle to retain our heritage and identity.”

I'm a watercolour and ink artist based in Oxford UK. I sketch and paint daily, aiming to create bold and loose yet defined - think abstract realism. My subject matter is wide: people, landscapes, city scenes, animals, skies and illustrations. Often, there’s a storyline for the viewer to ponder. I am fascinated by all manner of relationships. I use a variety of high-end archival paper and professional paints. Original works vary in size, from A6 (postcard) to A1 (poster size). "I'm Josie Clouting. I am a landscape artist inspired by wild and ancient places. My paintings are expressive and intuitive, and respond to the light, atmosphere and topography of the natural world.

"I’m Alex Singleton, originally I studied Graphics and illustration at Saint martins. I spent four years working in studios in Sydney and developing my art work. Returning to Britain I trained as a teacher and focused on how I could make learning more enjoyable experience for others. Around this time I got my paintings displayed at the Royal academy summer show and sold further paintings.

Ten years ago I lived in Bristol for a year and rented a cheap studio in an old police station. I curated an exhibition with a group of young artists from Malta.

Six years ago I won sn internship to train in Letterpress printing in Nashville at Hatch show print. And returning to Britain started making cards and getting runs of my work printed at Richard Lawrence’s studio in east oxford.

In the last seven years I have created murals around Oxfordshire . Breaking away from oil paintings and illustrative work, I have put my hands to letterpress printing, ceramics and selling cards at markets. I decided I wanted a more external dialogue with art and people. Working with other street artists has opened up creative worlds I never expected. Travelling to street art festivals and joining a graffiti crew has made me aware of how much work goes into forming identity as an artist."
