Welcome back to ArtBeat Radio! In today’s episode, we interview the first completely virtual music therapy intern, and most recent graduate, Marie. Listen in as she shares about her internship, her life, and creates a jingle with the ABR crew.

Art Beat Radio Jingle was written with the Art Beat Radio class at ART. They began class with watching examples of famous commercial jingles such as Kit-Kat Bar, Meow Mix, and In-N-Out. The class then discussed elements of a podcast that would be important to include in the jingle such as: listening, subscribing, learning, etc. The class then voted on what style of music they wanted the jingle to be, choosing relaxed over fast paced. Each student gave input on lyrics depending on the important elements they had discussed about podcasts at the beginning of class. Each student also made additional instrumental choices which included rhythm sticks, shaker, tambourine, snapping, and vocal choices. The song was recorded and students’ voices were recorded and included in the recording.

Milkias is an artist in our Mobile Arts Program (MAP). He participates in music sessions with his music therapist, Jenna and art sessions with his art instructor, Dani. Recently, Milkias worked on painting a guitar with Dani to be displayed in the Yamaha Cares UpCycled Guitar Exhibit at the Able ARTS Work Gallery. In this episode, Milkias shares information about the process of painting a guitar and some of his favorite pieces on the guitar. He also sings a song from one of his favorite movies-The Lion King.

Welcome to episode 8 of “Quarantunes” Where quarantine can’t stop our creativity! In this first quarantunes episode of 2021, we get to experience musical expression from our artists at CECA. Listen in as we hear songs inspired by Brazil, the Summertime, and life!

(0:18) “I Love You from Brazil” - CECA’s World Music Class

The World music class chose to have the first country that they studied be Brazil.  Brazil is known for a diverse range of music, including Bossa Nova and Samba.  Students learned about elements from these styles of music and then incorporated those stylistic elements into a composition of their own.  They made choices about the tempo, key, pitch, rhythm and melody lines of the entire song.  Finally, the class chose different lyrics, settling on saying "I love you" in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, French and Japanese.  The students also chose how they wanted the recordings of their voices to be manipulated or edited.

(1:40) “Dreamy Rhapsody” - CECA’s Music Video Maker Class

The song "Dreamy Rhapsody" is an original instrumental composition by the Music Video Makers class of Able ARTS Work. This was the students' final project of the semester. They created the song and music video by brainstorming various concepts about life and current times, then selected instrumentation and footage to match each concept. (6:33) “Feelin’ the Sushine” (The Friendship/Summertime Song) is a song that was written collectively by students in To Instruments and Far Beyond! class at Cultural Education Center for the Arts (CECA). Students first voted on writing a song with the theme of “friendship” and “summertime”. They then progressively voted on song tempo, instrumentation, lyrics, song form/structure, and other musical and stylistic elements. Some of the students singing voices and musical instruments were recorded live during virtual classes and embedded into the final recording of the song. A guest instructor and employee of Able Arts Work also recorded their melodica instrument during a visit to class. The title “Feelin’ the Sunshine” was decided upon after the completion of the music and lyrics and is based on a lyrical phrase in the song, “I wanna feel the sunshine”. Welcome back to ArtBeat Radio! Today we are filled with love, and present our Valentine’s Day special! You’ll get to hear original love songs, a Valentine’s jingle for our gallery, a short history of Valentine’s day and an original poem!

(2:20) “Milkshake and Fries” - CECA’s Songwriting Class

Resident artists at the Cultural Education Center for the Arts (CECA), a program of Able ARTS Work, submitted an original song and video to ArtBeat Radio! The members of their songwriting class went through a list of themes, and they collectively chose to write a song about “love.”

The lyrics were chosen by going through a series of love and relationship scenarios asking questions like:

“Where would you want to go on a date?”

“What do you feel when you like someone?”

“When do you find yourself thinking about the one you love?”

“What are you doing when you are thinking about him/her?”

The lyrics were completed within a few days and participants assisted in choosing all stylistic elements of the music, including song key, tempo, chords, instrumentation, and melodies. Listeners will get a chance to hear several of the artists’ singing voices that were recorded live during classes. This project is a collaboration of two different classes (Songwriting and Music Video Production) and so it allowed many artists to be a part of it. We hope you enjoy!

This Valentine Jingle was written by some of the students from CECA at Able Arts Work for the 2nd and PCH Long Beach Gallery to promote the Valentine products and activity “Make One Take One.” The students chose Valentine Candy Heart sayings like “Be Mine” as well as ones they created specifically for cards in the gallery like “Let’s Dance” and “You are My Sunshine.” The students then chose rhyming words to plug into the song as well as musical elements such as guitar rather than piano, tambourine rather than clapping, high or low bass parts, as well as a handful of other creative choices.

Today we have, special guest, Aaron! Aaron loves Christmas and especially Christmas music. This year, with the help of his Music Therapist, Aaron was able to create his very own Christmas album. Aaron started off by choosing some of his favorite Christmas songs to include on his album, He wanted the album to alternate between fast songs and slow songs, so he had a good combination of both. Aaron and his Music Therapist recorded each song by singing together over Zoom. The Music Therapist then edited the recordings together with backing tracks, to finalize the songs. This was a long process for both Aaron and the Music Therapist, but all of their hard work payed off in the end. He has chosen four songs off of his album to share on the podcast today, the first song Aaron chose is “Blue Christmas.” Next up, you’ll hear “White Christmas” both Aaron and the Music Therapist sing this song as a duet. After this, Aaron chose to share “Santa Clause is Comin’ to Town,” this is Aaron’s very favorite Christmas song and it was a lot of fun to record! Finally, Aaron chose to end this episode with “Holly Jolly Christmas,” another duet between Aaron and the Music Therapist.
