  • Ep. 135: Cat Palmer
born and raised in orange county, alifornia, cat palmer developed her insatiable romance with photography at 15 years old, against the backdrop of los angeles… a place teeming with racial divides, cultural diversity, and economic inequality. her world view further evolved as she immersed herself in the streets of mexico, developing a new obsession that would plague her art, forever… human empowerment.
from 1995-1999, cat made an academic go of her art and then, traversing the unexpected technological revolution, joined professional digital in 2005. (she has never forgotten where her heart lies, and fully intends to replace the “dark side” with the “dark room,” one day.) regardless of the medium, she has exhibited all over the salt lake valley and has won many awards. cat's most recent project "go home trump" went viral.
cat has devoted her craft to the expression of meaning through images, and has found a powerful voice in empowerment.
her empowerment themes have been: self-esteem, peace, self-reliance, i am human, there’s no place like home, peace to the middle east, age of aesthetics in defying societies definition of beauty, super hero women, 'i have a secret', keep the politicians out of our VAGINA, transgender visibility and a series with an orwellian theme.
cat is available for hire for portraits, family shoots, and corporate events. (She is resigning from doing weddings.)

  • HW Diaries Part 9: Fit You In My Mind
A breakdown of the writing, meaning, and hidden treasures in the ninth track of my new album "The Hallowed Wide" out on all streaming platforms now!
The final piece in the Make It Hallowed portion of our journey is a surrender, just like its counterparts in the previous two chapters (Quicksand and Split). This time, we’re finally ready to surrender the last inkling that we can ever have any control over, or ability to predict how another person will behave. But rather than feeling suspicion and scarcity at this fact, we’re able to feel reverence at what trust actually means when removed from certainty. What’s more sacred than realizing that every individual is as complex and ever-evolving as yourself, that everyone is a main character in their own story, that you have no control whatsoever over anyone…and in that humble and weighted frame of mind, still deciding to attempt connection?

  • Ep. 132: Josh Gibson
Twelve years ago I graduated from the prestigious film program at Brigham Young University and began my career in filmmaking.
At different times over the years I’ve had unique love affairs with each aspect of the filmmaking process—I’ve been a DP, a producer, an editor—I’ve played various roles in ideating and executing fiction narratives; and I’ve traveled to many countries as a documentarian.
Although the skill sets and disciplines have varied, the common thread that binds them all together is passion—I just love film—that’s my foundation.
I’m grateful for my various roles in the industry, because they’ve given me the one thing that foundations should offer—a solid place to launch from.
Throughout my filmmaking journey I held a secret—although I was incredibly comfortable behind the camera (and was making a good career out of it)—where I really wanted to be was in front of the camera, metabolizing scripts, taking the words of another and bringing them to life in a way that impacts people the way I’ve been impacted by my acting heroes.
So from time to time I’d take the occasional role as a favor to a friend, or hell, sometimes because it just sounded fun. But in taking on these roles I could see the trajectory of my true passion in filmmaking—acting.
Acting is a challenge, as it should be—it’s a puzzle, and it’s a piece of the process that I love figuring out. Stepping in front of the camera more and more isn’t what I thought it would be—I don’t feel out of place here—this is where I want to be—comfortable in the uncomfortable.
I don’t see any reason to pretend that acting isn’t something that I’m pursuing with the whole of my efforts. If possible, I’m sitting in a certain sweet spot—both humbled by acting opportunities and extremely confident that I’m the right person for the job.

  • HW Diaries Part 8: Bleed in Color
A breakdown of the writing, meaning, and hidden treasures in the eighth track of my new album "The Hallowed Wide" out on all streaming platforms now!
Bleed in Color is about so many things. It’s a grappling with one’s own moral compass—nurturing that little flicker of light after society/religion have done their best to snuff it out. It’s a grief for the time and energy we waste begging loved ones + the world to SEE ourselves with the love and acceptance we deserve (and for all of the beauty permanently lost in these battles). It’s an outpouring of joy at the beauty and wonder of our colorful human family. It’s a hope that someday we won’t have to bleed in order to be seen and valued. And, it’s a tribute to the creativity society’s “others” employ to teach the world how to see us, and to project our full vibrancy within world that works so hard to bury it.

About Artifice

Great art almost feels like magic—it opens our minds to brand new ideas, and teaches us to see ourselves and our world more clearly. Of course, behind all great art, there are artists. And that’s where the real magic happens…
