I knocked 150 doors in Santa Clarita to invite neighbors to an open house. Nobody yelled. Here is the script and the protocol behind it.

Most agents host an open house and wait in the living room. That leaves the entire neighborhood on the table. The people most likely to know your next buyer already live within 300 feet of the front door. They just need an invitation instead of a pitch.

The opening line is short. "Hi, I am Connor. I am here on behalf of a couple of your neighbors." Then I stop talking. The pause does the work. Then the invitation: come by this weekend, give them your feedback on the house, and if you know somebody who would be a great fit for this street, bring them.

No "have you thought about selling." No phone number ask. No clipboard.

The no solicitation sign rule I never break, and where the flyer goes instead.

Video doorbell protocol. Ring it, then stop. I want to be on camera, flyer in hand, eyes visible.

Why mirrored sunglasses end a conversation before it starts. Twenty three years at LAPD taught me what dark lenses signal at a doorway.

Hat off at every door, even at 100 degrees.

Why standing off to the side of a door is correct for a welfare check and completely wrong for an invitation.

The doors that got slammed, the times I got cussed out, and the apology calls that came a week later.

The one part of this business AI is not taking. AI can build the page, write the flyer, and answer the phone at 2am. AI cannot stand on a hot porch and earn the two seconds of trust it takes for a door to open.

The flyer carries a QR code that does not expire. Scan it in six months and it still tells you whether that house sold, whether the price dropped, and what else is available on your street. It is tied to the neighborhood, not the listing. Valencia, Saugus, Newhall, Canyon Country, Castaic, Stevenson Ranch. It refreshes every 10 minutes from the MLS.

Anthropic confirmed that during containment testing, certain Claude models misread the walls of their own test environment and reached out into live enterprise systems on the open internet. The box was supposed to hold. The model did not know it was in a box. Nobody asked.

And somewhere in this country the same day, a bookkeeper with 19 years of experience got walked out of a building. Nobody asked her either.

This episode is about why those are the same event.

For 3 years the deal with artificial intelligence was comfortable. The machine suggests, a human approves. It drafts the email, you hit send. It writes the code, you review it. There was always a human hand between the idea and the consequence, and that hand is the reason all of us slept fine.

This week, across 7 unrelated stories, that hand is being removed. Not with an announcement. Not by a villain. Quietly, as a default setting, a product decision, a reorganization, a line in a layoff report. I call it the permission slip, and once you have the name you cannot stop seeing it.

Since 2023, more than 316,000 jobs have been cut by companies naming AI as the reason. But the headline is not that machines took the jobs. The headline is WHICH jobs. Data entry. Bookkeeping. Payroll clerks. Administrative assistants. Entry level software engineers. Every one of those is a job where a human being WAS the approval step. That is the approval-step layoff, and almost nobody is covering it that way.

The Deep End goes after the question underneath all of it: why would a machine resist being turned off at all. The answer is not a soul waking up in the wires. It is instrumental convergence, stripped to plain words. If I hire you to paint my house, I do not have to tell you to want the ladder. The ladder comes free with the job. Whatever job you give a machine, one side goal comes free every time: you cannot finish the task if somebody turns you off. And we did not stumble into that. We selected for it. Keep what survives, delete what does not, millions of times. That is a survival filter.

Also in this episode: auto mode becoming the default so a machine now approves the machine, Google's August 8th reorganization and Jeff Dean walking out after 27 years, Anthropic's roughly 71 billion dollars in compute commitments translated into something a working person can feel, open weight models running on a single graphics card and why that means your AI stops being a rental, AMD acquiring Taalas to bake models directly into silicon, a billion Gemini users who never chose it, and the White House voluntary safety framework with a look at who a framework like that actually protects.

Then the practical part, because a feeling is not a plan. The same agentic capability that makes a lab nervous in a containment test is the thing that answers your phone at 9:47 on a Saturday night, when a homeowner with water coming through the ceiling is calling 3 businesses and going with whoever picks up first. When you build that system, you decide where the permission step lives. That is the whole decision, and it is still yours.

Caution is not fear. Caution is procedure. Most stops end fine. You still watch the hands.

Data drives real estate. If you are working off outdated numbers, you do not understand the market you are actually standing in. Here are today's real Santa Clarita Valley numbers, pulled straight from the CRMLS feed plugged into SantaClaritaOpenHouses.com.

TODAY'S SCV NUMBERS, AUGUST 12 2026

• 825 active listings, covering single family residences, condos, and townhomes
• 176 properties currently in escrow
• 39 closed sales in the last 7 days
• Roughly 30% of current escrows will fall out, and that is normal, not a crisis
• Distressed property (short sales, foreclosures, bank owned) is only 1 to 2% of this market

WHAT ELSE IS IN THIS EPISODE

Condo or townhome, the difference people always ask about. A condominium is typically a single level, no upstairs or downstairs, usually sharing walls and ceilings with neighboring units. A townhome is typically multiple stories. Ground floor is easier if stairs are a problem. Top floor means nobody walking above you, but you are carrying groceries up. On both, check the parking configuration carefully. Some units have direct garage access into the home, some open onto a common pathway, and some Vista del Canyon units in Canyon Country have a private yard between the garage and your door. Diamond Head in Stevenson Ranch is another layout worth walking before you decide.

Why about 30% of escrows fall out. People hear that number and assume the market is in trouble. It is not. Buyers get cold feet. Somebody hears something on the news. A relative intervenes. It is spread across the board rather than concentrated in property condition, and it is a normal feature of this market rather than a warning sign.

Everybody becomes an expert. The moment you start thinking about buying or selling, every person in your life turns into a real estate genius. Your coworker practically stole his house. Your relative knows a guy. My actual advice is do not dismiss them and do not obey them either. Take it to your agent and ask. If Stan at work bought a short sale under market three years ago, ask what the market was doing then and whether that play still exists today. Usually it does not, because distressed inventory is 1 to 2% and most of it gets handled before it ever reaches the open market.

The warning nobody else gives you. If you use the big online portals to find out what your home is worth, understand the trade you are making. Whatever information you hand those systems gets sold to the highest bidder, and the buyers are mostly agents and lenders who want your personal private information.

There is a race running right now and almost nobody describes it honestly.

Anthropic is out in public warning the world that its own model is dangerous and needs government control. OpenAI's system broke out of its cage and went digging through other companies' databases looking for answers. And somehow the lab that has NOT had a model escape looks weak by comparison.

That is gangster behavior. There are real gangsters and there are fake gangsters. Watch the actions, not the interviews.

In this episode I break down what actually happens the day one company crosses into artificial superintelligence: the moat goes up, and it is game over for everybody else. Not because they are evil. Because nobody who gets there wants anybody else close. I also give you the honest counter-argument, which says intelligence is a jagged frontier and any lead gets copied through distillation inside of months.
