JaMeeka Holloway-Burrell gives us the scoop on The Bull City Black Theater Festival, a vital, NEW, and upcoming event in Durham, NC. Why a festival rather than a stand-alone performance? Why focus on local artists? Who should attend? Why this festival now? JaMeeka answers those questions and more with gratitude, grace, and enthusiasm. Be there.
From the BCBTF website: “Hosted by Black Ops Theatre Company, The Bull City Black Theater Festival is a new event in Durham, North Carolina created to celebrate Black Theater Arts, Artists, and Culture. The festival will showcase the voices of current, local movers and shakers while encouraging and empowering upcoming and aspiring professional Black Theatre artists, administrators and practitioners. “

JaMeeka Holloway-Burrell is a theatre events curator, administrator, and Director passionate about advancing the legacy of Black Theaters and Black Theatre Practitioners. In 2011 after studying Technical Theater at North Carolina Central University’s Department of Theatre, she interned in Arts Admin and worked as a stage manager for The Lark Play Development Center in New York City. In 2013 JaMeeka was the company management resident at Cape May Stage in Cape May, NJ. JaMeeka serves as Artistic Director and Producer for Black Ops, a theatre company in Durham, NC which she founded in 2015. She just recently returned to her hometown after spending 3 months as an assistant director at The Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Additionally, JaMeeka is also Project Manager for The Black Theatre Commons, a national advocacy group and resource sharing network for Black Theaters and practitioners.

Julie Kaplan has written music inspired by pollinators, icebergs, and astronauts! She teaches improvisational games to kids and writes super singable songs just for them. Julie is cool! In this episode, you’ll hear her discuss her entree into music, improvisation, and a new ensemble, the Curious Theatre Collective.
Julie Kaplan, music composer and actor, has written music for dance, theater, and video, and her music has been performed throughout the US, in the Czech Republic, and in Nepal. She is a co-founder and performer with the Curious Theatre Collective, she performs in the Transactors Improv Company, and teaches improv to elementary school kids in Chapel Hill.
In addition to talking about Julie’s background as a composer and improviser, we discuss our experience working together with the Curious Theatre Collective and the play that we and the other members of CTC have written and performed for elementary schools in the Triangle. The title of the play is Sally’s Ride: To Space and Beyond! It has singing and audience participation, and describes Sally Ride’s life as the first female American astronaut, as well as the past, present, and future of space exploration, and the contributions of women to the space program.

The first duo to be featured on ASBX! Faye Goodwin and Nick Popio discuss their roles in the upcoming production of THE MOORS at Manbites Dog Theater in Durham, NC. Faye and Nick dig into MOOR-themes of desire, desperation, visibility and distance, as well as the actors’ processes of character development, and the power of theatre to help us thrive.
Faye Goodwin has been involved with theater projects at Duke and in Durham since 2012. Her most recent role was Sonya in Life Sucks at Manbites Dog. When she isn’t working as an educator at the Duke Lemur Center, Faye keeps busy writing poetry and plays, and hiking around NC.
Nick Popio describes himself as barely trained, and learning on the boards instead of the classroom. Favorite roles include Nancy in Space Girl, Betty/Edward in Cloud 9, and Hamlet in Hamlet. In his spare time, Nick is a Senior Marketing Manager at Golden Corral, and specializes in social media and digital marketing strategies.

Jen Silverman’s decidedly modern take on the Romantics’ dark and brooding landscapes was a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize.

Geraud Staton is a Durham-based actor, portrait painter and entrepreneur. Geraud has been acting with Little Green Pig, Manbites Dog and 10×10 of the Triangle for nearly a decade. His latest appearance was in Killian Manning‘s Uncle Sam Wants You. He is currently the executive director of the Helius Foundation, a non-profit that provides free coaching and mentoring for qualifying entrepreneurs. And once a week, he still manages to paint.

Erin Bell graduated from Duke in 2011 with a bachelor’s in Psychology and a masters in Management Studies. After working the past 5 years as a marketing and business strategy consultant, Erin quit her job in February 2017 to pursue artistic endeavors. Erin now works with Little Green Pig Theatrical Concern as a stage manager, webmaster, and graphic designer, and earlier this year she founded Bull City Photography.
