  • Episode 60 - Justin Aversano of Save Art Space

My guest this week is Justin Aversano. Justin (@justinaversano) is the co-founder of Save Art Space (@saveartspace) , a non-profit that buys billboard space and replaces images used for advertising with public art from local artists. We talk a lot about that project, the impact of public art, his photography book Twin Flames, how technology is influencing art and how art is influencing technology, why society tells people they can’t be an artist, whether everyone is an artist, and a whole lot more.

If you’re looking to get involved in Save Art Space go to their website https://www.saveartspace.org and submit your art! It’s only $10 per image for a chance to have your work on a billboard or public advertising space. You can also donate there if you’re not submitting work and just want to support the cause!

    Check out Justin's photography: https://www.justinaversano.com/

As always, thank you for listening and if you would like to support the podcast go snag yourself a hoodie, t-shirt, or mug with the Artsy AF logo at www.moteefe.com/artsyaf

  • Episode 59- NFN Kalyan

Painter, sculptor and digital artist NFN Kalyan (@nfnkalyan) joins the Artsy AF podcast! Kalyan's work is a clinic in photorealism and creative composing, sampling work from renaissance painters, Marvel comics, and images from pop culture. You NEED to check out his work and give him a follow.

We talk about his journey into making art- from being able to draw photorealist images when he was only 13, to deciding to quit his job suddenly at 26 and become a full time creator; where we stand on separating an artist from their art; the concept of free will; Hindu mythology; NFTs and the exciting opportunities for a new art market AND as a new medium for creating in and of itself; and some brutal facts about being an artist.

Hope you enjoy this episode and thank you for listening!

  • Episode 58- The Return of John Speaker

This week’s guest needs no introduction, it’s the man, the myth and former co-host of the Artsy AF podcast, John Speaker! (@johnspeaker)

We talk about relating to social media, the ebbs and flows of creativity, living a balanced art life, success and it’s trappings, what our ‘three wishes’ would be and we round it out with a Visionary Haiku.

We’re doing a giveaway the rules of which are tucked into this episode somewhere. So, listen until the end and write either of us with the answer. The first person to write us gets the prize!

Thanks again for listening and have a creative week!

  • Episode 57- Supersillyus

Rob Uslan is a multi-instrumentalist, producer and satirical t shirt maker. He makes and performs music under the moniker, Supersillyus (@supersillyus) and when this pandemic isn’t forcing us all to stay away from concerts, he sometimes performs with the Supersillyus Life Band using live instrumentation.

In this episode we get into the effects of the ol’ pandy quarantine on the music industry; Rob’s pivot to making a living off satirical t-shirts during the lock down, Brand reverence in psychedelic culture and all the spiritual bypassing that tends to come along with it, the idea of false scarcity and a few brutal facts about the music industry.

A big thank you to Rob for being a guest on Artsy AF! This conversation was a lot of fun and I think you’ll find it very interesting.

PLEASE do yourself a favor and check out the Supersillyus instagram page for some hilariously wearable memes and be on the look out for new tunes that will diverge from the classic Supersillyus sound on Bandcamp in the (hopefully) near future.

We’ve got big news. We’re being sponsored by Hollywood (yes, THE Hollywood) for this episode. They recognized our creative acumen and asked us to film an intro for this new sitcom about friends taking mushrooms together. We said 'Fine, Hollywood, we'll do it but,' we added with a drawn out pause 'under oooone condition.'

The faceless black shadow that called itself Hollywood let slip a questioning grumble 'Hrrhhn?'

'You've gotta sponsor our podcast episode, we need way more industry cred'  The ancient shadow shrugged where it's shoulder's would've been if it were in any kind of discernible, human form as if to say OK.

and, well... as they say... The Rest is History ™

Wanna see our Hollywood debut? Click on over to our YouTube channel for that AND a video interview.

  • Episode 53- Chelsea Lewinksi

Chelsea Lewinski ( @lewinskiart ) is a muralist, painter, digital artist and single mother based out of Denver, CO. Her realistic style of portraits using all spray cans is unique. She paints humans that she feels like don't have enough of the spotlight on them; from her personal friends to community members where she is creating a mural.

Most of our conversation centers around Chelsea's journey in to her art career which started less than two years ago. The distance she has covered in that short amount of time in terms of leveling up her skill and capitalizing on opportunities is pretty mind blowing. She talks about what it's like being a single mother and an artist and a lot more.

  • Episode 53- Alex Ubatuba

Alex Ubatuba (@ubatubaglass) is a glass artist living in Denver, Colorado. I visited him at his studio, Satellite 6 in Evergreen, CO and sat down to chat about his story with the art of glassblowing- from starting in the early 2000s in the conservative midwest, to carving out his own artistic lane in Colorado. We also get in to the process of glassblowing itself as well as his particular process for creating the beautiful and bizarre “Living Light” glass sculptures. Listening to Alex, I got a clear picture of just how much the glassblowing game has changed in the last twenty years. Spoiler alert- it’s changed a lot, from the legalization of cannabis in many states to the new and creative ways smokable pieces have changed, heady glassblowing has moved from the margins to being a celebrated form of artistry.
