the closeness that they have seems like they consider each other family    and to me seems like   the african american may have been more of an indentured servant all that time instead    the   first slaves  there were 20 of them  that were indentured servants    there were also white european indentured servants around the same time   so they are more equal to each other than people realize for some reason 

since african americans first started out as indentured servants, went to life long slavery, but were considered hyphenated americans by 1776,  the african american is a lot closer to the european settlers and their descendents     than  the native americans   or the mexicans are
