goodbye/fun facts....National Guacamole Day...made of avocados, which are well-known for the health benefits.  Originally native to Mexico and Central America, avocados  grow on trees.  In fact, avocados are technically considered a fruit!  in the 1500's The Aztecs make a spread with avocados called "ahuaca-mulli" or "avocado sauce.  then in 1833 Avocado trees are first planted in Florida and three years later, they're cultivated in California.  in 1935 a man named Rudolph Hass originates the term, "Hass Avocado," after purchasing a seedling from a farmer. Today, Hass is the most popular avocado variety in America...38% of us don't mind paying extra for it when we dine out!

goodbye/fun facts....national felt hat day..Historically, men and women wore hats as protection and status symbols.  This is normally the time of year, people traded in the lighter, cooler straw hat for the warmer felt hat.    While primarily made from wool, felt can also be made from the fur of other animals. Usually, rabbit and beaver were the furs of choice.  Stetson also introduced two new lines of felt hats using genuine buffalo and bison fur.  There are also vegan options made out of faux suede or polyester if you prefer.  Go on a hat shopping expedition You might just find out the Fanchon, flower pot, Reubens, Fedora, or a Panama is really your style instead.

goodbye/fun facts....gobstopper day...Gobstoppers, popularly known as jawbreakers, are hard, normally round, delicious candy with layers and layers of sweetness. The term ‘gobstopper’ derives from ‘gob,’ which is slang in the United Kingdom and Ireland for the mouth.  The origins of the gobstopper can be traced back to ancient Egypt, where sweets were created using natural ingredients such as the likes of fruits, nuts, and seasonings. By the 1500s, the manufacturing of sweets had begun on a small scale with all products created by hand then by 1700's machinery was introduced that made the process much faster. Roald Dahl used the name in his 1964 book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” when he created the Everlasting Gobstopper, which was first manufactured by Breaker Confections, before being purchased by Nestlé.  The world’s largest jawbreaker weighs 27.8 pounds and has a circumference of 37 inches, which is bigger than a basketball.

However, too much negativity can have an adverse impact on our emotional well-being.  positive thinking has the power to reduce the risk of heart diseases, and alleviate stress and anxiety.  One of the best ways to start thinking positively is by catching your thoughts and reframing them. If you find yourself having a negative reaction to a situation, try to change your perspective.  A lot of small wins throughout the day will result in a positive attitude.

goodbye/fun facts....International Literacy Day   raises awareness and concern for literacy problems that exist within our own local communities as well as globally.  Although much progress has been made in improving literacy rates in the more than fifty years since the first International Literacy Day, illiteracy remains a global problem. There are thought to be more than 750 million adults around the world who cannot read.  it may seem incredulous to learn there are people living and working in your own community who not only cannot read this post, but are unable to read a book, a restaurant menu, a road sign, a voting ballot, an instruction manual, a prescription bottle label, or a cereal box.  One of the biggest things you can do to help is to donate your time locally.

goodbye/fun facts....National Acorn Squash Day (a.k.a pepper squash) celebrates the autumn flavors.  Even though it is considered a winter squash, acorn squash belongs to the same species as all summer squashes including zucchini and yellow crookneck squash.  acorn squash is versatile, it can be baked, microwaved, sautéed, or steamed. Some cooks like to stuff it with rice, meat, cheeses, or vegetable mixtures. You can also toast the seeds of the acorn squash much like pumpkin seeds.
