goodbye/fun facts....The history of sweatpants started with the establishment of the French clothing, footwear, and sports equipment company Le Coq Sportif in 1882.  in the 1920s, the founder, Émile Camuset, designed sweatpants for athletes. They were made with knitted gray wool jersey pants.  In 1926, the American clothing manufacturer Russell Athletic reinvented the sweatpants’ material by replacing the wool jersey with soft, comfortable cotton.  until the 1980's sweatpants were mostly confined to gyms and university campuses. The introduction of social media in the 21 century took athletic wear to new heights as their classic looks became associated with fitness, casualness, and a laid-back attitude.

In 1983 Sony releases the first camcorder, the Betacam system, for professional use. Camcorders were so popular at one time that they even inspired the creation of a T.V. show about funny home videos hosted by the now late bob saget. The first versions of the camcorder were tape-based and recorded analog signals onto videocassette tapes. As time went on and digital recording became more of a norm, the tape was replaced with storage media (internal flash memory and SD cards). Now...almost all of us just use our smartphones.

goodbye/fun facts....National Tin Can Day is a day dedicated to the humble tin can that preserves some of our favorite food items. Without tin cans, the process of storage and preservation would have been entirely different and less convenient. The best thing about canned food is that it is accessible to people from all walks of life. unlike some inventions credited to just one person...this invention took several people to perfect. The first patent was issued in 1810... and those tin cans were initially thick with no provision for opening them, a rock, bayonet, or hammer and chisel, did the job for decades. It wasn’t until 1858 that Ezra Warner invented the first can opener. Today, the Tin Can is used to package everything from sardines to crackers and lighter fluid and they are completely recyclable....so recycle them!

Milne, creator of Winnie the Pooh, was born....alan alexander milne went to a small independent school run by his father...in fact..one of his teachers was prolific english writer H.G. Wells. Milne created Winnie the Pooh in 1926 about a boy named Christopher Robin (milne's son) and his array of stuffed toys. his stories have sparked wholesome, honey-loving, childhood dreams for nearly a century. in 1960 The story of Winnie the Pooh hit the prestigious New York Times Best Seller List. milne died on january 21, 1956...his widow sold her rights to the Pooh characters to Stephen Slesinger, whose widow sold the rights after Slesinger's death to the Walt Disney Company

goodbye/fun facts....cesarean (or c-section) day... The surgery has been performed at least as far back as 715 BC following the death of the mother, with the baby occasionally surviving. But the first successful cesarean section delivery were both the mother and baby survived was performed by Dr. Jesse Bennett in 1794. His wife was in a difficult labor...it wasn't going to end well. He did not have proper medical apparatus and equipment at home to perform the delivery and had homemade instruments only but assembled planks supported by barrels, to make the operation table. A candle was lit to serve as the guiding light. Laudanum, which is a tincture of opium, was used as an anesthetic. Dr. Jesse never disclosed the details of the crude C-section performed in his barn...but many years later Dr. A.L. Night, who was a young boy when Dr. Jesse performed the C-section, assembled eye-witnesses of the C-section delivery and made a detailed report of the incident.

Historians credit the European merchants in the 1880s as the first to stick labels to their products, in an effort to promote their goods and wares to passersby. pre-industrial entrepreneurs used a gum paste to get the labels to adhere and, well, stick: hence “stickers. The observance is in honor of R. Stanton Avery, who was born on this day in 1907. Avery was the original creator of the adhesive label with removable backing. and of course every radio station has had a promotional giveaway with their bumper stickers!

goodbye/fun facts....1870 – John D. Rockefeller incorporates Standard Oil. Oysters Rockefeller was created in 1889 at the New Orleans restaurant Antoine's. The chef developed the dish due to a shortage of escargot, substituting the locally available oysters. The dish was named Oysters Rockefeller after John D. Rockefeller, the then-wealthiest American, for its extreme richness. It consists of oysters on the half-shell topped with a secret green sauce (which is probably a purée of a number of green vegetables that may include spinach) and bread crumbs, then baked or broiled. Many chefs and restaurants now serve their variant of Oysters Rockefeller. The original recipe is a closely guarded family secret.
