News; game: outburst; travel destinations with the rudest service; goodbye/fun facts....National Baker Day celebrates the rich history behind the surname 'Baker' and the essential role of bakers....like the origins of many last names...it was an occupational thing. The last name Baker is of Old English origin--it comes from the term 'bacan,' which means 'to dry by heat' or 'to bake.' It originated before the eighth century and was primarily used as an occupational name for people who baked bread or bricks. During the Middle Ages, most households baked their bread, so the popular belief is that the name was used to refer to the owner of a communal oven, who was in charge of baking bread for a community or village. Moving from England, the name spread to the neighboring countries of Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. The name baker is also becoming a popular first name. So the next time you're baking something in the kitchen now you know why we call it baking.

Originally operated manually by a cord, the first ceiling fans date back to around 500 BC and were made from large leaves mounted to the ceiling that would be moved back and forth to provide a gentle flow of air. Water powered rotary ceiling fans were developed in the 1860s and by 1882 the first electric powered ceiling fan was engineered. Commercial success of these fans meant that by the 1920s, ceiling fans were commonplace in the US--The advent of air conditioning subverted the influence of the ceiling fan and it took a back seat by the 1960s. However, with recognition of the need for energy conservation, the ceiling fan has begun to come back into popularity. Compared to any air conditioner, ceiling fans consume 47% less in homes and offices.

The sweet was a favorite among British schoolboys in the first half of the 20th century. Gobstoppers are made by slowly depositing layers onto a core (such as a pressed ball of sugar or a gumball); it takes several weeks to manufacture, as the process of adding liquid sugar is repeated a lot of times. By the 1700s, machinery was being introduced in larger-scale confectionery companies to create more interesting and unique sweets, such as the gobstopper....and then Roald Dahl the British novelist best known for his childrens books, including 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,' introduced the fantastical concept of the 'Everlasting Gobstopper.' His imaginative storytelling brought the idea of a multi-layered, never-ending candy to life, inspiring the real-world confection.
